Period greenhouse & thanks

Finally finished the structural work and plants etc are now back in residence.

I don't claim to be an expert woodworker/DIYer, but I'm reasonably happy with the end result. Went for single glazed toughened glass in the large panes, standard glass in the louvre vents (which were a bargain and so easy to fit). Greenhouse is cedar, with hardwood cills, corotherm roof, polycarbonate for the very large end panes. Smells gorgeous. I would estimate that the greenhouse, including the staging gravel, louvre vents and new door etc. cost me around £1800. Which is considerably less than the quotes I had from various companies.

Super job, Pford! Well done!

From the photo I think I see that you simply installed cedar glazing bars and then "sandwiched" the glazing between planted-on beads. A good, straightforward technique that's obviously served you well.

I just hope that Mrs P never sees it - she'll want something far better than her current Hall's aluminium job!

I agree - a great-looking job and also now about twice the size of the original.
Did you also make the new benches?

Penners - I have attached draught excluder between the beading and the glass to allow for expansion and hopefully remove any rattles.

FF - Yes - I made the benches...they were much easier than I thought they would be. The frame is 100 x 100mm rough sawn, repeated every metre and then I have 50 x 25mm slats across the top. The benches are then fixed to the wall with 'L' brackets. Only took a day although it was one of the hottest days of the year....think I lost a stone in weight....

Yup - and it's always comforting to have somewhere safe to hide, in the event of nuclear attack.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the visual aspect of the lean to. ( I like the louvre vents, brilliant for plants that need lots of ventilation and do not mind a dry atmosphere)

Joss - The wall survived the rain, but we had a car crash into another section of wall in the Winter. We've been waiting for the warmer weather to complete the repairs. The idiot was tearing around a blind corner in the middle of the road and collided with the front tyre of a tractor! He bounced back off the tractor and into our wall. Luckily, there was only minor damage and he admitted liability...and his insurers coughed up. But this wall has been through it.

I've not been on PPUK in ages as I've been v.busy at work for several months. Finally easing slightly and have been cracking on with jobs. One of our roof sections is being reslated. We have nail fatigue and were losing slates with every gust of wind. For those that recall my other post about our front porch - work is nearing completion on that. I'm just waiting for the railings to complete the job.

FF - Will post an external photo soon - I'm intending to limewash the dwarf wall...which should help to hide some of my amateur bricklaying
I agree with you on the 4x4 - there is an aesthetic pleasure in it's chunkiness. Mrs F has been so pleased with the greenhouse that I caught her sitting in it, reading a magazine and eating ice-cream this afternoon!

Maybe you will end up with a completely full length new wall by the time fate has dealt her hand!! Glad you are back on PPUK again and I heartedly approve of Mrs PF's use of the greenhouse!!

Such a huge improvement, it looks beautiful, and so tidy too. Sorry to hear about the wall incident ( again ) it has suffered more than it's fair share of abuse, lets hope that's it for a while!
