Unfortunately not Penners, what it does mean is the Government, in it's need to ensure everyone has high speed broadband paid for Suffolk to have it's own cabinet instead of building us a new school in Staffordshire

It tells me that my cabinet is number 1 (I'm so proud) but it doesn't tell me where it is.

That's easy, this is East Anglia. Cabinet number 2 is in Norfolk, no.3 is in Cambridgeshire, etc :wink: Cabinet 1 must be in the geographical centre of Suffolk I reckon.

Funny you should say that. I used that link out of curiosity and it showed that we're connected to cabinet number 2. :lol:

:lol: I used it too and if I had broadband it would be cabinet 18. Last time in London I did the BTFon WiFi pay-as-you-go thing and despite my initial worries that it would be money for nothing, it was actually quite good. 39 lovely British Pounds for a month, unlimited, and mostly signal was good enough to use the i.Player, also meant I could hook up via the i.Pad while out and about. Much better value than the Vodafone pre-paid dongle that I used with the old laptop, that was 15 per top-up and money disappeared really quickly.

Not if you have a proper bakelite telephone with a real dial. Ours doesn't ring without the microfilter thingy :idea:

Do you have ordinary or fibre broadband though Keith? "Ordinary" broadband needs the microfilter thingies, when we had fibre installed we got rid of the microfilters. We have a "proper" phone with a dial as well, not quite old enough for Bakelite, more 1960's GPO !

It has two major advantages over the modern cordless digital thingy we've also got:-

- It has a ring loud enough to wake the dead
- It's screwed to the wall so you always know where the damn thing is. SWMBO has a habit of wandering round the house with the cordless handset, then leaving it wherever she happens to be when the call ends, meaning that next time it rings you have a mad rush to find the bl@@dy thing! :evil:

BT's PCP cabinet locations are not released to the public
They are regarded as commercially sensitive and I'm sure a few of them might be regarded as of National security importance if they contain the lines of significant people etc.

You can usually quite easily find them - by walking around the area - green boxes 1m tall approx.
Google for BT PCP cabinet will give you pictures of the various types from various ages.
If you know a large number of phone numbers locally you put in each one into the BT DSL checker and that will tell you which cab the line is on.
That will give you eventually an approx service area for any one cab'.
It is then likely to be somewhere near to the centre of the area usually just closer to the exchange side somewhere on a road side corner/verge.
They were often at road junctions as this makes the subsequent radiating out of the various distribution cables down each road easier - though it makes for safety issues when BT have to work on them.

Those lines with no cab number quoted are on exchange only lines fed direct from the exchange with no intermediate cab' . Usually but not always these are the lines closest to the exchange.

Fibre broadband and the dial phone is 1960s GPO rather then real Bakelite. I took the microfilters off when the fibre was installed but the dial phone stopped ringing till I put the filter back on that extension. Probably something to do with how much crud (sorry, patina) there is inside the phone!

I've just used the DSL checker thingy for the line out here in darkest Herefordshire... Says we're on Cabinet 1 too! Now I understand why we have such slow download speeds - the signal is clearly coming from Suffolk!! I'm not surprised... :roll: :lol:
