You're preaching to the converted as far as the virtues of R4 are concerned. It's possible there are bigger fans than me out there, but it would be a close-run thing. I deliberately used it as a comparison so you would realise my strength of feeling towards electric blankets. My day would be immeasurably poorer without R4 but I'd get by with merely blasting music around the house . . . but my reward would be a warm, nay hot, bed at the end of a long cold day. Bliss.

Anway, who said anything about 'just for warm toes'? :wink:

Fair point Middi, but you may have misunderstood that they can be turned off before actually getting into bed, making them somewhere around 100% safe. :wink:

It's only the initial burst of luxurious warmth that I crave and, strange as it may seem, I intensely dislike the bedroom window not being open all night. Perhaps a cold room makes a warm bed even more enticing.

Funny you should say that, and I'd usually agree, albeit begrudgingly of course. But a friend is currently in hospital recuperating from an operation to fit a chest drain as part of his treatment for pneumonia, after weeks of 'toughing out' a chest infection amid all our friendly jibes about 'man-flu'.

The jibes won't stop, of course, and we'll still call him a wimp (I even offered a DIY drain using a swiss army knife and a Bic biro, but he declined :lol: ), but it does make one think about that other apparently male trait of not going to see a doctor soon enough.

I haven't been around for the past week to make any comment on the above - I hope you are feeling better Rob and it didn't turn in to flu. We went out last Sunday afternoon to take Pauls car into the garage with the intention of me driving him back home, unfortunately the snow came down very heavy so I walked to my parents so I could easily get into work the next day and I've been staying with them all week, only returning this evening. I've walked the 3 miles to and from work each day in snow over a foot deep - not nice, its took me an hour each direction.

I agree flyfisher about not making fun over illness. Pauls dad went to the doctor yesterday and got sent straight to hospital by ambulance - he's got pneumonia.

Yes, it's easy to joke about being ill, until something serious happens. Fortunately my friend is now back home and recuperating, although being a self-employed architect he has a mountain of work to catch up on, which isn't really compatible with taking it easy - but, no work, no invoices, no income.

I hope your father-in-law (?) responds to his hospital treatment as well as my friend and is back home for Christmas.

There is a perfect solution to stop your backside frost bites when facing a GOOD log burner.

The proper way of course is to have a hit and miss fronted 100mm air inlet as close to the fireplace as you can, then the air required for the updraught will not be "sucked" from the cracks, crevices and vents from the rest of the house creating these draughts across the living space.

This is one of the jobs that has been on my list for about ten years, with the grating still lying in the debris at the bottom of the log-basket beside the fire. But one of the benefits of the log burner is the amount of humid air it sucks out of the house and I really notice the difference to humidity levels when the fire is in use. I fear that sorting out the air supply to the fire will result in less air sucked through the house and I will lose both the draft and the dehumidifying effect.

I guess you can't have it both ways, can you?
