Period Christmas erections?

Fingers crossed that our lively young Labrador does not pull the tree down-- have opted for a small tree this year, out of temptation's way! It still seemed to cost the same as a big one though!!!

Well maybe a tree and some decorations are just what you need, last year I had taken all the plaster off the walls and was in a general state of disarray. I'd promised it would be done before Christmas, but a well placed tree and some holly meant the whole house took on a dishevelled Dickensian charm, resulting in a happy wife and meaning i could put away the tools for a few weeks and enjoy a few fireside whiskies!

(Third Christmas and the room still not finished by the way, not sure how long this technique will work for)

Robgil, afraid it became pretty expensive since we bought the tiles, the company who supplied them got bought out by fired earth shortly after we ordered them, and promptly more or less doubled the price. Luckily they honoured the original quote for us. Polish Lubelska bricks, they're sliced into 3, but the middle slice isnt really much use. They're very nice, but take some serious scrubbing to get the grout off as they're really porous.

Penners, I'm a canon man I'm afraid, no starburst lens or filter though, think it was just my sigma 10-20mm from memory, (nice and cost effective super wide angle if you are ever in the market), the starburst is just from the shape of the aperture blades with a long exposure so I could get it to around f16 or f18 or so.

I'm planning on having a go with this Blue Peter method of shaping the "Bokeh" but my partner's birthday is today so we won't be decorating for a week or so at least.

Thank you, see the Xmas decorations hide a multitude of sins! Must say I'm looking forward to sitting with a glass of mulled wine and reading some M.R.James ghost stories to the kids there in a few years. (And then probably spending half the night reassuring them that there are no ghosts in the house!)

I also have a Sigma 10-20mm - my favourite lens, particularly for landscape work and dramatic skies. However, although the aperture blades will indeed affect the shape of a bokeh, I'm surprised that they'll also have that starburst effect on an in-focus point of light. I must try it.

Agree, its a lovely lens, especially for capturing those big East Anglian skies and landscapes. For a nice bokeh though, my little prime 50mm f1.8 takes some beating, great lens for taking shots inside a dark little cottage without flash, and has a lovely almost round bokeh.

The starburst was entirely accidental, but I think the key must be having a really small aperture like f18-22 (or large aperture, I always forget which way round it is) combined with the high contrast of the dark room and bright lights.
