I'm confused by its apparently having two listings under My Computer. Are you sure that they're both the old disc? If so, did it have two partitions?

Try double-clicking on the E: and F: drives - one at a time. In both cases, do you get a listing of all the folders and files on that drive? Do you recognise the folders/files on one (or both) of them as those on your old computer?

the hp recovery file is coming up as empty, i think thuis is the old vista operating system restore.
when i click on local disc F it loads the progress bar nearly to the end then tells me i need to format the drive before i can use it, i press cancel t5hen it says ''data not accessible , data error (cyclic redundancy check). so i press ok and it goes back to doing nothing.

I agree with you that the HP Recovery drive sounds like a recovery partition. So yes, your F: drive sounds like the important one.

Your results sound like fairly bad news, so far as getting Windows to read the disc is concerned.

So you'll have to return to trying to get R-Studio to recover the files on F:. I've never used that software so I don't know how effective it is. But if there's severe physical damage to the disk or its circuit board, I'm afraid you may be out of luck.

Try just one more thing. Click on Start then RIGHT-click on Computer (depending which version of Windows you're using, this may be My Computer). In the small menu that pops up, click on Manage. After a brief pause, the Computer Management window should open.

Under the heading Storage, click on Disk Management. Again, after a few seconds the right-hand pane of the window should show a graphical representation of all the drives it sees, together with a brief report on the drive's state of health and its contents.

Does it see your E: and F: drives? If so, what does it report?

i am running r studio on it at the moment and it seems to be working, its found 136 gb of info on the drive and i am recovering it onto another outboard drive.
i tried disc management and it said the disc was healthy so hopefully thats a good sign and i can get what i need from it. fingers crossed.

Rob - are you sure you want everything on the disk - most of those will be application and/or system files and useless on the new machine.

Might be quicker just to locate what are personal (eg My Documents, etc) aand just copy those across.

Good point, FW, although it might be safest to copy across the lot, and then do a lot of deleting afterwards.

It depends how identifiable the files are under R-Studio.

I think you're doing the right thing Robgil. I agree with all the above comments, including the likelihood that you're copying over a load of unwanted system files, but with a suspect drive it's always a good thing to copy as much from it as you can before attempting any fixes.

After a run-in with a Land Rover, I'd expect the drive to be all-or-nothing, yet it clearly hasn't suffered any physical damage to the circuit boards of the disc platters otherwise it wouldn't be working at all.

The errors you mentioned sound like data errors on the drive itself; things like corrupted files or corrupted indexes and/or pointers, though it's difficult to imagine how a Land Rover could inflict such subtle errors on a hard drive!

After copying over all the accessible files, I would have a go with some disk recovery tools to see if the damaged files/indexes can be fixed. If you can recover the drive to it's original state then it will be easier to copy only the meaningful files as FW suggested.

As for the 'recovery' partition, if it's anything like a friend's HP laptop then it's used to return the PC to the state it was in at the time of purchase. In my friend's case this was very useful because it was his father's old company laptop and was full of password-protected files and folders that he wanted to clear out. Using the 'recover' software, he was able to restore the laptop to it's original state, losing all the other folders and files in the process. That was good for him, but I suspect it's not what you want, so beware!

Can you still adjust the tappet clearances on modern cars? Even if you can, first you have to find the bloody things, buried under all those anonymous black boxes - computers, regulators, sensors and so on.

Then I'd have to find my feeler gauges....
