If you need spares (or a second one ) this one has 18 hours still to run, and no bids at £400. It appears to be a foreign right-hand-drive model compared to yours though! So if you want the reverse configuration, presumably you can dismantle and swap around.

If you cannot fix the thermometer for cooking purposes, as a quick fix, you can buy a small oven thermometer from kitchen shops! Make sure that you get the one that HANGS on the shelf. It is reasonably accurate for cooking and costs about £3.

I nearly bought one the other day, but thought I'd look at mending it first. All I need to do is take 50' off for the right temp, so long as it is a constant 50' over
When the snow goes and we venture back out to the shops, I think I'll buy one anyway.

Oh I don't know, no good for an oven but you could measure cold temperatures using feet - so long as they are female ones.

Somewhere near the temperature of dry ice for Mrs F's feet, typically.

Last sunday we had the last fishing club competition match of the year on a lake that is very undulating in depth from 2 to 8 feet deep. We knew that the booked lake would be frozen and would have to brake the surface ice to fish it, also knew that it would be very hard to catch the odd fish. Being the competitive sort I I decided to ring the lake owner to get some "inside information" about tactics to use on that lake in such prevailing conditions.
he was very obliging, he said " you will definetely catch, the water at 3 feet is cold a bit warmer at 5 feet but if you want to break the ice a bit further fish at about 7 feet 6 inches and the temp is about right for these conditions". I rang a fishing buddy (a stickler for keeping records about outings catches, prevailing weather conditions and water temperatures) and told him not to bother with his faithful thermometer, just a tape measure would do.

Totally confused him.

( neither of us caught a fish.... should have taken a thermometer :wink: )

I'm astonished. Our Esse gave off a bit of "body" warmth, but it was very modest. I wonder what's different in the design of the catalytic model, as compared with our oil-fired one.

Our woodfired Esse is also scarily hot! When running on oven temp 'Very Hot' it burns the top of my bread in 5 mins! If you remember to cover it though its stonkingly quick!
If you leave it heating up with the door on the latch, and forget about it, then you get what we got which was a red hot hotplate! Took a few large saucepans of cold water to bring that one down a bit.

Does anyone know? How hot can a cast iron appliance stand to be? We won't come down to a heap of molten iron will we??! :?

I wouldn't worry about melting cast iron (MP is about 1150 degC) with a wood fire, though that's not to say that a big red-hot lump of the stuff in your kitchen is particularly desirable. :shock:

Thankyou, though you make a good point re the hot lump of iron. Dog seems oblivious to it though and is pressed up agin it at all times!
