If I can add, Thank you to @Feltwell, @Cubist, @CliffordPope, @a twig
So far one window out 4 is completed -
(almost - I'll swing the sashes out again , so I can re-point/re-seal the vertical interface between the outside brick wall and the outer sash case, and then apply bronze cupped screws to the staff beads)
But here's the moment the penny dropped.
The moment I pushed the staff beads in and created a 'seal' for the sashes against the brushes on the parting beads, staff beads, and meeting rail , all sound from the outside world was 'eliminated' immediately.
Allow the staff beads pop out (loosen) a few millimetres (allowing the sashes to 'unseal' from the brushes) , and the outside world noise rushed back in
The effect was like a switch turning the external worlds noise 'ON/OFF'
If some one had of told me this, I would not have believed them.
It's made the effort, so far worth it and more.
PS: @Feltwell . The black Mighton Grabbas made for a very simple fit and fix
PPS: Theres also a 5 mm 'bubble' of Aquaseal weather strip , that neatly slides into a grooved plastic carrier, that's routed into the top of the top sash to seal against the top of the box
