Gareth, what do you suggest is done with heaps of old, but quite serviceable, pantiles if you don't want them put onto roofs. Crush them for hardcore or pile them on top of each other and call it Art?

I suggest they stay on the roofs of the buildings they're keeping dry at the moment.

Don't forget they'll need drilling as well, it's usual to nail every third (fifth? can't remember) course and more if you're exposed.

Really? I haven't drilled mine. The only ones to have slipped were because of rotted battens. If pantiles were intended to be nailed wouldn't they be made with holes in them already?

Don't cost your time into the price of the job . . . .

Probably true of almost any DIY job, unless you can do the job as quickly as a full-time professional.

I rest my case. Imagine what an eyesore the old roof would be with 10% of the brand new ones scattered amongst the original tiles. Ugh!
Might be alright after a hundred years of weathering though, perhaps :wink:

It is sound and quite generally accepted conservation to do as Gareth has suggested, and if it's Gareth's views, experience and professional expertise on conservation matters versus some who post here I know who I would listen to first... Ditto Andrew. I gather he's just won an award for work on his own house by the way.


Also can you support the assertion it would take 1OO years for new tiles to weather into something aesthetically acceptable by reference to buildings you know?

Quite easily - beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if I don't like the look of it then it's an eyesore to me. I appreciate that others may genuinely like it or that some people might be easily influenced.

I'm not terribly easily influenced, if that was a dig at me, but then what could I know about historic buildings and their conservation?

But I have a public inquiry of which I'm a part ongoing and can't be arsed, as ever, to play silly games with you. Cos you ain't worth the effort.

Pantiles are made with holes in them now. Felting a roof may alter the dynamics somewhat.

I have mixed feelings about my section of house roof pictured. Mostly I think it was conservation carried too far. Just a couple of years down the line and some of the tiles would like to fly away - only nails keep them there, but they're not seated in the same place as when I laid them. When you look at the pic you'll say what was I thinking of, I was thinking of conservation but when I think of the time and effort plus now the problem of putting it right it doesn't seem so clever.

Other sections of roof with better tiles, not unlike K8's, are fine and I have no misgivings.

Since my shed tiles were comparable to the ones pictured on the house, I took a decision not to re-use them.

thank you, some great throughts shared above. I hope to go the re-lay and re-use route, let's see what happens as I first will need to source some spares as currently I have only about 20. I would hope to increase this stock before starting the job which may take a while. I have an end gable to re-render first which will take my immediate pennies up.
I have a few new tiles used in a prior repair and they don't sit right with the old tiles, though who is to say a different maker might sit better.

Well Penners, I have been sitting here for the past three days desperately trying to pull apart the evidence of A Leading Expert (!) for an inquiry.

Believe me, you don't know the half of the Philistinism which rears its head when 'experts' are paid handsomely to say good buildings are rubbish, and it just sickens me.

missed the two extra pages earlier. There are no salvage yards in the local of my cottage so any tiles I might manage to find are because someone else is fitting new tiles. I also like the idea of replacing with new if I have too as an approach. My tiles are not nailed and I have lost only about 4-5 through storms over the years, they sit tight even though this is a coastal position. If the original tiles had not been drilled and nailed I would still have them on my roof!
My main concern is the amount of felt that is on show when you look at the roof, this does not show in photo. The only way I can see to ensure that the roof keeps dry is to ensure that the felt I fit (or the exsiting) is applied a rubberoid like product. My roof has full eaves air flow plus the roof under the felt is in fact laid with marine ply so there is no air way there anyway to protect with a breathable felt. Maybe the tiles have been laid with too shallow an overlap :?:
The roof is dry internally, I jusy want to protect the long term soundness of the roof whilst retaining the character.
