Thanks for the replies. Still undecided about what to do with the panel rails...the living room ones look kind of...wrong...so I am tempted to let these go. The room already has a picture rail, a beautiful ornate cornice, and lovely mouldings in front of the windows, so I think they are just a bit OTT for my taste.

Just a thought - if you don't have to decide just yet what to do about them, then don't. You may be amazed at your revisions of opinion when you revisit these things later on with your decorating schemes. Don't think, necessarily, it's the mouldings that are making it twee and too fussy. It may just be the colours and the patterns that are currently there.

I found my house too plain and poor looking. I set about ripping off 30s mouldings and replacing them with something altogether more ornate. Now, I realise it was probably the wrong thing to do - I'd have achieved the look I was after just with paper and paint and leaving the mouldings alone.


It's so easy to pull stuff off- much harder to do the plaster/ wood repair that entails.

Well, true enough - although I am gentleman enough to make room for her in my cupboard when she's carrying coffee and cake.
