Good grief. I suddenly remembered the 'Kenwood chef' smell. It was rather distinctive. Dry, oily and maybe a bit plasticky too.

My Chefs are but modern ones I fear - A701A's - late sixties early seventies. I would like one of the early fifties ones but I have been threatened with divorce if I get another plus all the gadgets, which come up on ebay occasionally.

The really battered old one has that sort of pong, the less used one (an e-bay buy, in case the other breaks down, they can be bought very reasonably on ebay) is OK. I have a third bought really cheaply for spares, and a heap of gadgets to go with them.

I do have a repair manual but I tend to the 'if it's still working don't' approach. There is a firm, Billingtons, which will carry out a service for twenty five quid plus postage though.

It sometimes takes so long to get a message submitted that I lose patience and try to stop it. Then I try again and it all happens like lightning and I find I've double-posted.

Is that the same stuff that my mother used to give me, which I knew as cod-liver-oil-and-malt. Wonderful stuff. The dose was only one dessert-spoonful a day, but I used to sneak extra helpings when she wasn't looking.

Yes, I think it's basically the same. Delicious sticky brown gunk, that was supposed to give you all kinds of vitamins and minerals.

Probably played havoc with the teeth, though.
