I remember my Grandfather being very keen on bread & dripping, but I couldn't bear it. Same with bubble & squeak.

Fishfingers - real cod ones back then I think. Angel Delight (something of a misnomer).

Marmite toast remains a firm favourite to this day.

Banana sandwiches with Nutella instead of butter . . . . mmm, must be nearly lunchtime.

Turkey dripping on toast at Christmas. The only REAL reason to have roast turkey at christmas!

use the brown jelly only , not the white fat. Spread on thick white toast and grill to melt. Sprinkle with salt and eat. A good recipe for High BP!

I used to compete with my Grandad for it. Sadly nowadays the turkeys just dont yield enough brown dripping jelly - scandalous if you ask me.

Tinned greengage jam and tinned processed cheese (fron Army /Cadet ration packs) together on white sliced, along with the tube condensed milk on oatmeal block. Scrummy

mushed up bananna, milk and sugar, better with carnation or even better with cream.......... but cream only came about once I started buying my own food!

How about the scrapings from the mixing bowl when Mom had been baking cakes, delic!!

I remember toasted Fruit Malt Loaf dripping with melted butter and mushroom sandwiches with thick buttered bread. Mr Kipling's French Fancies at Grandma's, washed down with dandelion and burdock, cream soda or ginger beer.

Add to that flying saucers, aniseed balls, dinosaur eggs, and wham bars!

Somehow sprouts never seemed to compete with the above....

It was hundreds-and-thousands on bread where I grew up (Auckland)...

And I do remember being particularly partial to a spoonful of horlicks powder, straight from the tub.
Or Rise & Shine orange "juice" powder.

Dried spaghetti dipped in a jar of marmite.

Icecream sodas, made with a dollop of vanilla icecream in sodastream lemonade.

Real comfort food: "Mother tea" (because my Father normally made tea, so Mother tea was an event), of marmite on toast and soft-boiled eggs, all cut up in a bowl together.

Jelly cubes, not made up into jelly (yeugh, but yes!).

Sherbet fountains - I could make one of those last for hours!

Mr Kipling's French Fancies at Grandma's . . .

Ha! It was Battenberg cake at my Grandma's for sunday tea, and always in the 'front room', which only seemed to be used for such occasions.

But now you've brought sweets into the thread . . .

. . . the latter also brings back memories of saturday morning 'pictures' at the local Odeon, sometimes being able to sneak in for free via the fire escape doors at the rear near the toilets, and also trying to rush out before the final playing of the National Anthem - though if we mis-timed it and got 'caught out', we would dutifully stand for the duration. How times change.

Don't talk to me about Wham bars. I found some in the newsagents in Ullapool the other weekend. Took a trip down memopry lane... first bite and I was enjoying the traditional crunch of the "fizzy" bits, only to discover it was my tooth that had disintegrated.

If we're talking sandwiches, then my childhood (well teenage) favourite was Mighty White bread, with butter, tuna fish, lettuce, baked beans and picallili! They were awesome.

Other favourites were home-made "cornflake kisses" - cornflakes, melted chocolate and golden syrup mixed together and left in the fridge to go hard. Even nicer at Easter when made with broken up Shredded Wheat, formed into nests with a little chocolate egg in the middle.

Prawn Cocktail Skips. Fruit Salads and Black Jacks. Sherbet Dib Dabs. Lardy Cake.

Oh and proper full fat milk in bottles with foil lids pecked by the birds - before it gave you cancer (or depression, or whatever) to drink the stuff.

Sweet Cigarettes - chocolate wraped in a "rizla" in soft american style fag packets!
Or candy Cigarettes with red tips so you could look cool having a drag on it aged about 5!
or better still - coconut "tobacco" sold in red packs with a ship on that looked like grandads old shag (I just know there will be plenty of innuendo to follow that one!)

Sherbert pips, mint shrimps, cola cubes, bassetti hard licorice - I'm hungry now!

Hold me back!!!....A Quarter Of still does coconut tobacco!!! And squidgy foam strawberries and ...and ...and.

What about Texan Bars...."You wouldn't fire a man till he'd eaten his texan bar would you"!! took out all the fillings you had put in due to eating all the other 70's sweets.

'Fluffy jelly'....as made by my Mum and Auntie...jelly whisked (by old fashioned hand whisker thingy) up together with evaporated milk then set in the fridge...yummy!

Nowadays the Bl**dy nanny state has banned everything nice in schools.
I remember Mr Morris the metalwork teacher ran ours (as well as driving my school bus) and sold penny chews and massive purple blackcurranty/licorice humbug like things from a jar.

Oh and Icepops on the school field in summer - Memories.

The nanny state took on a new and sinister tone last year when kids were banned from selling homemade cakes at breaktime to raise money for charities - and the reasons were...

1. They did not have a valid food hygiene certificate!
2. It was contrary to the healthy schools initiative!

Leaving the poor mites no option to buy a cake in the canteen - but no! "No cakes sold without a main meal" So in other words no chips no cake! Arghhhhhhhh! :evil:

My enterprising sons have got round this dictat (and spotted a gap in the market when the school tuck shop closed, and they now sell brownies outside the school in the morning. Not quite a chariry effort - though; unless you count them as a charity case. Alan Sugar eat your heart out!

Before Penners points it out, I should make clear that the brownies in question being sold are small chocolately cakes. They're not pimping out small girls in uniform!

How about Radio Malt - does anyone else remember their mum shoving a large spoonful of this gorgeous, gloopy stuff into their mouth, every day (or was she just desperate to shut me up)?

And how about bread-and-milk just before bed? Bits of ripped-up bread soaked in a bowl of warm milk with sugar sprinkled on top.

Once sweet rationing ended, I quickly became addicted to sherbert fountains (you sucked up the sherbert through a licorice straw) and flying saucers (sherbert inside a rice-paper shell). Ah yes - I reemember eet well.
