Totally. I am then going to restore the plasterboard ceiling to cover up all of those nasty original beams

r.e. Removing gypsum plaster. I have found that if you can keep it wet for 3 weeks or so it turns to a mush and can be scrubbed off. Has any one else noticed this?

Isn't that what you get anyway, when you use gypsum plaster on old buildings? That's probably why you get a couple of inches of cement under it :evil:.
