That is very extraordinary. It's a pity so much has been done to hide the origins of the house, to the extent that I would have said it was mid nineteenth century and not of any great interest :?
I'll guess that you are in Somerset? second guess is the north east, third is Nottinghamshire or nearby.
It may be that the chimney with the early fireplace was the only consistently reusable part of the house through successive rebuildings.

In Yorkshire. I know you would never think it was old from the outside.I think if it wasn't rendered it would look totally different in stone with mullion Windows...I know there are some on the ground floor for definite. Another oddity is it has concrete looking corridors upstairs.

What are your plans for the house? Taking render off is difficult. Do you plan to unmodify it to some extent, or will you plan to use it as your home and worry more azbout making it comfortable?

Yes, the house has been thoroughly disguised. If only it could talk, all the changes it must have seen as the city overflowed the farmland and a house which began life in the country and never moved woke up one day to find itself in the town.
It's good that you still have a couple of older windows, both stone and wood. They will provide a model if you are ever able to get round to removing those hideous, but no doubt practical, plastic things.

Hi it is our home but I wish it hadn't been "modernised" when I was a child. I would love to eventually take the render off and change the windows and expose the mullions which are still there. I am opening up some doorways which have been sealed. There are about 23 doors which sounds crazy.,
I have taken down the partition wall in the office where the old fireplace is. When the stairway was removed in the 70's they fastened the beams onto the partition wall so had to put a joist in. The stones which were in the fireplace are going to be used to make a window seat. I am going to leave the good stonework exposed and render the rest and paint white. The floor is a horrible plywood so I am going to put floor boards down and use a wax oil to finish ...I will have one artex free room!.
