It's not quite that bad! It was a poor roofing job about 30 years ago and many slates hang on by gravity. Lot of roof, only doing the worst parts.

Here's part of the reason that the house is so damp

It has been dug, but the trench is hidden under these flags:
The east aspect has also been dug with evidence of a small drain at the base of the wall:
