Well if you are building in stone it's normal to have some edging to the windows - here's another sort:

Here's the solid surround again this time in Northumberland and unpainted:

It's pretty normal stuff really.

(The wall on the right of the bottom pic featured in today's Guardian letters page. The pointing isn't too great on the house either, but at least it has been saved from a previous unfortunate application to 'repair' the stone with some ersatz stuff and put a fakeey Vic shopfront on ... )

In my bit of West cumbria, the stone surrounds are usually painted and are usually dark colours - black, navy blue, dark green etc

We have the surrounds here in Scotland as well. Like the instances mentioned above they are nearly always painted. We consulted with Historic Scotland when renovating our house (main part c. 1775, grade A listed) and they advised that this was a post war fad (in Scotland at least anyway).

As a result, following their guidance (3+ pages of A4 solely on painting schemes) we (re) painted the front of the house all one stone colour and it had a dramatic affect. It made the house look much more period but also, as Historic Scotland suggested, made the windows look much smaller. We were delighted with the outcome.

Sorry, no pictures - we have yet to join the digital camera age!

That rather grand looking building HALSTEAD GREEN FARM, COLDEN, HEBDEN BRIDGE on that page is interesting - it has weavers windows above what seems to have been a cart height barn door - the archaeology of the house looks fascinating ....

Certainly has a more interesting range of properties than our local Halifax. I like the idea of the 360 degree image - great for a nose around to get ideas.

Interesting to find old pictures - this is Broughton in Furness.

Note the dark painted surrounds, and it seems from this and other pictures that window (and even door) reveals were at times painted white, no doubt to reflect light into dark rooms.
