Well if you are building in stone it's normal to have some edging to the windows - here's another sort:
and a variation on the theme:
Here's the solid surround again this time in Northumberland and unpainted:
It's pretty normal stuff really.
(The wall on the right of the bottom pic featured in today's Guardian letters page. The pointing isn't too great on the house either, but at least it has been saved from a previous unfortunate application to 'repair' the stone with some ersatz stuff and put a fakeey Vic shopfront on ... )
