I've seen this featured in the East Anglian Daily Times. I'm sure this is the one they claim has actually appeared on a Cadbury's tin.

It's odd that it's been on the market for so long. The timber frame is fantastic for a house of that size. Their rafters are bigger than our studs! It makes you wonder if at one time it was actually a larger house, particularly when you look at the fireplaces and by the way that one side of the house stops so abruptly.

Yes, as a child I seem to remember seeing this water mill on a tin lid. I agree, some of the timber is a lot 'richer' than might be expected in an original mill. Possible replacement at some time. The actual water wheel would have been fixed onto the side of the building and the river diverted by sluice gates when milling was due to start, other times water would have flowed under the mill.

Ah, that's very useful, thanks for that. Picture 3 is just the kind of thing I am going to try to achieve with mine - are those pamments? If so, that's very useful to see how that looks - pamments, huge brick inglenook, exposed beams, limewashed walls.

The flooring in the kitchen / dining area looks like modern floor tiles, if I purchased this place that would be the first thing to be ripped out and replaced with a floor of pamments. Also the kitchen units are hideous and would have to go in favour of free standing old furniture.

That's best, Nigel. There's no such thing as a comfortable drive across the fens (unless you're a devotee of roller-coasters) but that route is as good as any. Certainly shorter than going via Peterborough.

No, it just doesn't do it for me. Modern wood burning stoves leave me cold, as do black and white stripey beams. Give me an Aubusson carpet over quarry tiles, and plaster mouldings over slopey ceilings, and large sash windows over dark little casements. The exterior looks oddly truncated too.

Looking at Street View, I think the theory of the mill wheel on the flat side of the house looks to have gone out of the C20 windows. The stream follows the road which is on the opposite side of the house and, looking at the ground, there is no evidence that was was anything on the flat side. As the listing suggests, maybe it never was a mill.

I agree with you Joce on the black beams. I love a great frame but not the black.

Agreed, if I purchased (unlikely, but possible) the floors would have to come up and more suited floor laid. The large inglenook in the kitchen would easily accept a nice old solid fuel stove/oven. Those black painted beams can be easily cleaned with zero damage to the timber, somebody in here posted a link recently to the Company who can carry out this work. My thoughts are that it was certainly a mill in years past, hence the very heavy timber frame, I understand the current owners had invited an expert on the subject of mills, be interesting to see his report. Other than that its tough to find anything centuries old that has either been mutilated or is at the point of falling down due to neglect .

Mellis is a very pretty little village, the railway goes through the centre of the village, but from memory that cottage isn't too close for the sound to be a huge problem. I would think the main issue would be the level crossing gates closing every 20 mins or so!

After the concert we were standing outside on the pavement when the most enormous freight train trundled past us, slowly and majestically, down the middle of the street.

We occasionally used to add an A14 surcharge at my previous employ, particularly if it rain was forecast. It is public spirited of folks to careen into the barriers to prevent access to the wild east in wet weather, though, as we found out when attempting to navigate through traffic leaving a 'Brassica Festival' in the wet.

No no. I meant in the living room. I agree the kitchen/dining room floor is modern tiles and not nice. I meant picture 3, the one with the big inglenook and the sofa. Do you think those are pamments?

(I also agree that I don't like the black beams, and mine will be staying their natural colour!)

Can't be bothered to drive to North Norfolk----- dear me! The only thing that stops us heading up there once a week from sunny Bedfordsiire is that our lovely labrador, now aged 14 is too old to take there for a day trip---we loved going up there each week for a long day out on the Holkham and Blakeney walks, after we moved back here.

You're so right Jocelyn, I should feel truly ashamed. Even more so when I consider that I used to drive the 350 miles to Cumbria for a long weekend a few times a year. That's our regular play ground. North Norfolk will get a visit this year, alas without the dog for exactly the same reasons you have.

On a slightly disgusting note, I remember a visit to Holkham beach with our retriever. Even though it was low tide with a zillion acres of sand, he managed to find the one dune that had a dead seal on top of it. He decided to roll in it and, seriously, we could not get within 20ft of him after that. We tried enticing him into the sea to wash him but at Holkham, as you probably know, you can walk out a very long way and still not get water higher than your shins. We were booked for lunch in Holt and had to take him there in the car as he was. That is not an experience I would wish on anyone. Well, maybe with the exception of the builder who encased my house in cement :twisted:
