But without such a derisory guarantee for wooden windows, people might question the 'benefits' of plastic windows. Surely everyone 'knows' that wooden windows can't last longer than plastic ones. :roll:

As i've said before...the climate change debate is used by some (not all by any means...but a significant minority) as a tool to demonise aspiration and the middle classes....holidays, flights, cars etc. etc. As FF says, houses (particularly period ones) will soon be added to that list.

I hate ugly windows. It is the absolute best and easiest way to make a house look like trash. If you want to put double glazing in and you are not ripping out the original windows (or something with historical merit) then OK, but why go for those awful uPVC windows. Yes uPVC is cheaper, but it looks horrible. People will spend money an anything, anything (kitchens, cars, holidays, SKY, plasma tellys, more cars) except for some decent windows that actually look nice...

I received some junk mail from a national window company this week "Stop Throwing Money Out Of The Window" with "£2000 National Window Scrappage Scheme" emblazoned on the front page. Inside it stated "The UK's first window scrappage scheme" blah blah . . . save loads of money . . . blah blah "To start saving energy and money call The national Window Scrappage Scheme today on . . ."

So there I was thinking that the petition must have been successful and that the scheme has officially started when I read on page 3 "Why we're leading the charge for a more energy efficient Britain . . . . The National Window Scrappage Scheme is just one of the initiatives we have introduced . . . add your name to the petition at . . . "

The rest of the brochure explains how we can save the planet by fitting new windows or even buying a new conservatory. :roll:

So there we have it. A masterclass in jumping on the bandwagon; not only will your new windows save money and maintenance, but they'll save the planet as well. And all because XYZ "is on a mission to raise the energy standard in every home". What would we do without them?

You may find a call to Trading Standards about some of the claims in such brochures will, at present, fall on interested ears...

I think the truth is that some plastic window firms are in quite serious trouble. They may think risking a slap on the wrist from Trading Standards or the ASA is worth it. The firm I buy my double glazed units from is on about a three day week in the plastic window factory.
