Oak stripping

I done a bit of research and i'm not 100% sure but looking at the pic in this link. It could be the paneling you can see on the left hand side?

It looks very much like it, doesn't it?

No reflection on you, but I still think it's a shame that the panelling was ripped out of its original home. I wonder how on earth it got painted pink!

You're probably talking about Scotchbrite* - it's the same stuff that you use in the kitchen for scouring the baked-on black marks off pans (which always occur when I've been cooking). It is widely used in the wood industry as a mild abrasive. It's fine, so long as you don't try to use it when it's getting worn and crumbly, at which time it leaves tiny green or brown flecks of itself all over everything.

*Not always called that by the likes of B&Q.

Nope - this stuff is grey and actually marketed as a synthetic wire wool. It is much more resilient than those horrible green scourer pads which, although cheap, just leave green fleks/residue everywhere!

Hi Penners,

I agree with about the fact that its a shame that it no longer resides in its original birthplace. Although i guess with it being a mixture of both pink and white its was unlikly that the person responsible for its demise was going to throw the man hours into restoring it.

I guess at least its staying in East sussex!

Well just put a light oak stain and the first coat of shallac. Will perhaps post a updated pic tommrow morning. I will also post some pics of the skirting which is in to 2 parts and very very tall..its going to look great.

Hmm, frustrating. As you can see from this pic I have the main panel and the skirting below. The skirting is in 2 sections.

Even though i have adopted an identical approach, the skirting is coming out lighter than the main panel. I guess I need to add some more stain then compare and contine until I get a close match. I guess i'm suprised that its not closer based on the fact that I took the wood almost all the way back to its original form.

Would be intrested to know peoples views on the depth of stain for oak. Its going into our dining room so I dont want it to make the place look to dark and morbid.

Personally I think the colour is wonderful as it looks in your photo, but that's a completely subjective judgement that depends on personal preference. As to the colour difference between the panelling and skirting, it doesn't look like much to worry about, in the photo.

Remember that the way in which you view the grain of wood can have a significant effect on the way its colour appears. Two identically coloured pieces of wood can look quite different colours if you view one with the grain vertical and the other horizontal.

It's a natural material - enjoy its individuality!
