Douglas Fir can be found in wide boards, up to about 300mm I think. And visually it blends in reasonably well with pine.
You can find it in reclaimed form, often in large billets which can be resawn.

But have a look around your local salvo yards, or ask about new from local timber merchants.

Thanks Jon - that means a lot from someone whose house is as outstaning is yours. If mine were a tenth what yours is, I would be a very happy man. 
So far the staircase is sealed just with children's grubby feet. It is developing a nice patina all of its own, but some days I do wonder if I should clean it and oil it. Then another job comes along and I forget all about it!

We had some protection over the stairs at times, but essentially a lot of traffic for 3 years before it came a house and was sealed with treatex hardwax oil. That has done the trick well.
I did make it my vocation to save the building and do a pucker conservation job, from purchase to moving in was almost 15 years. I also have a background of construction but again look what I had to work with, the potential was brilliant, although the condition was poor.
Yours has such a great position and some great features too, what do the marks over the door mean?
