It looks so lightly damaged that I would be thanking the previous owners, purple gloss is nothing compared to some things.


Can it really not be lived in for a while? Before you start the careful restoration?

Maybe somebody else could live in it Schoolmarm, but it's not for us, especially with two young children. The photos have been of the best bits of the house, but many of the rooms have big gaps where floor should be, plaster falling off and you can see through the walls and roof at several points. Possibly my husband and I might just manage it, but with a 4 yr old and 6 yr old, it's just too dangerous at the moment. The previous owners haven't done any damage as such, other than doing whatever they wanted to the property and ignoring the listing, but at least most of those things can be put right i.e. UPvc windows replaced, fireplaces reinstated etc. But the main damage has just been done from the past 10 years of it being empty and not made watertight I suspect.

No, not stupid - I have great respect and admiration for people who take these huge projects on - not sure I could, well, perhaps might be able to if there were a decent pot of money and the end of caravan living vaguely in sight. I hope you can get a few rooms habitable this year and be able to shut the most dangerous parts off from the children!

I'm amazed I never even lashed the ladder to anything - we had it like that for at least 6 weeks if I remember! He's a wee bit bigger now, and spent the last week climbing up rocks in Scotland like a mountain goat... I am somewhat greyer for watching him!

A warm welcome, C&D. You've got a real gem there. I quite agree with Nigel about the staircase, though. To my untutored eye, it doesn't look Jacobean. Much more Georgian. It'll be very interesting to see what Stephen has to say.

I notice that you predict a two-year project to get the place liveable-in. That's a coincidence -it's exactly the timescale that Mrs P and I predicted for our first major renovation (a smaller house than yours but in a similar condition), when we moved into our caravan with two children, two dogs and two guinea pigs. How we treasured our moving-in day - four years later.

But don't let me discourage you. I'm certain you'll achieve your two-year target...

...well, almost certain.

Hello CandD and welcome after lurking for so long, what a lovely first post - with pictures, children and all!...

My first thought on seeing the pictures (after admiring the action shot of the children) was how lucky you are, to have a beautiful period carpet in your home. I am gratified to see that my fellow PPUKers thought the same, so clearly I am learning!

I'm also curious about the panelling on the landing; it seems to disappear into the top flight of stairs, suggesting that they're a later addition? What a lovely looking house; I do hope you will indulge us with more porn!
