Now there's some good news, thanks Mike. Now that you've said that, it would explain the 'gap' at the foot of the render which was created prior to the current vendors purchase.
That'll save me some trouble and allow me to concentrate on other things in the short term. PHEW!

Yep my head is starting to spin! but i'm feeling more confident by the day that owning and maintaining the 'old girl' is achievable.
Mostly thanks to everyones help and tips.
Next step...........get out there and speak to my local resources.

Evylyn - I am pretty sure that if an earth wall was subjected to enough moisture to require drainage at the base it would already have fallen down!
The point of stripping render from the base is to avoid moisture rising up the masonary between two layers of impervious plasters. By removing one side this becomes highly unlikely. Just for the record. Mike.

Removal of cement render can be the last straw - it should not be done all at once, or collapse may be the outcome. It may be what's holding a soggy wall together! Until of course it finally doesn't. So one way is to remove part of the render to allow slow drying first.
