Thank you for all the ideas, and the poems. I'm going to forward the Larkin one to the church. The village is Chardstock in Devon - we're 30 miles from Exeter. No large population nearby. Opposite the church we have a early Victorian Grade II listed school which has just been sold off for development. The school moved into a purpose built plastic warehouse on a green filed site (don't get me started) three months ago at a cost to us tax payers of 4m squid and used the argument that the village could use it's assembly hall for functions as part of the case for the new building - despite being slap next door to the under used community hall. There is no cohesive plan as you can see. The churchyard is full of graves mostly of families who have relatives still in the village and it's on a big slope! everything is against it. I'd like to see a rural business in it - lime plastering courses using the old fabric as the practical workshop but who's going to fund that. Vicky
