We live to the North of the county, our lovely local town being fairly close to Lincs/Cambs border. I know of at least one place to source locally quarried stone from, so will enquire further down the line.

We have already planned to repoint and plaster the wall in lime, fit a new hearth and then some nice seagrass.

Also if you look very carefully on the mantlepiece there is a box showing corrosive substances (ie test pots) from Strippers of Sudbury.

The room offends my senses each time I enter it, so I was hoping for some sympathy. But it will be lovely once we finish it and that is what matters.

Oops yes I guess that's what I meant. I don't know that much about thatch yet, although I am doing my homework. Do you think that quote was expensive as I have no idea.

possibly but it depends on what you want , i was quoted for a weathering coat back and front and a ridge at 14k but my roof is quite simple.
the best thing to do is get as many quotes as you can , ask the thatcher exactly what is required and what he/she will do.
also you can get a retired thatcher to give you an unbiased opinion on your roof to give you a good starting point ,

also its worth adding that any thatcher can call them selves a master thatcher. i would look for someone local who perhaps knows the area and may even know the house. the guy who will be taking care of my roof told me that it was his father who thatched it last so its worth asking around.
