No, the screen was fine. In fact my measuring was very precise - I cut a stick to the intended panel length first to ensure it would go all the way down the posts unhindered - I just then proceeded to hold the stick against the wrong end of the panel. Still, makes a change from getting the wrong end of the stick I suppose.
So how is Penners? I was beginning to wonder if you'd been to far flung foreign lands (*) where hostile natives had kept you hostage and forced you to watch endless repeats of Sale of the Century.

Ha! I remember that rotating knight in shining armour that introduced Anglia TV programmes, but you're a little out of touch about Sale of the Century, although its erstwhile host can still be heard presenting Just A Minute on R4. I think he must be about 120 by now :lol:

The letters are vanishing from my Period keyboard.
The key between W and R has become anonymous, the one betwixt A and D is erased, the stick-on letter that I used a few months ago to restore C disappeared then turned up stuck to my fingertip.
The V, B, R, W all look like following suite, and now that I look I see N and M and for that matter H heading down the same path.
Autopilot seems to take me to the right keys on the whole, but eventually this will become a problem.
Although less of a problem than experienced by scribes over-reliant on autocorrect, not of course including any on this forum

Alas, I suspect your keyboard is not a true period piece. If it was it would likely have been made using a ‘double-shot moulding’ technique whereby the lettering is formed right through the key moulding, a bit like a stick of rock, and so is impossible to wear off. But those were the days when most keyboards were built to a standard and not a price, unlike today’s £5 disposable keyboards. No wonder the oceans are full of plastic

Yes, and it was never a problem with my typewriters.
I do have a clickety-clack analogue keyboard, and a digital convertor. It's just that I never seem to come across them both at the same time.
Something will have to be done.

Finally got round to investigating a problem with a damp wall. The house was built in the late 1920s and an extension added in the mid 1970s. I knew there was a bit of debris bridging the DPC and had always assumed it was down to shoddy workmanship when the extension was added. Pulled five bricks out from the exterior and find a mountain of old sand/lime that is clearly from when the house was constructed. It would appear that the pile of debris extends along much of the wall, so it is going to be more than just a couple of bricks that need to be removed.
At least the original mortar can be hammered out with little more than a putty knife, and the aggressive power tools reserved for the cement pointing & joints.

Seeking a flexible sealant for the ends of feather edge. Needs good adhesion to wood. Preferably overpaintable.
Rummaged online, then spent a long time reading the instructions of all the sealants in our local national builders' merchants, and a good hardware shop.
A couple of promising candidates.
'Do you have the data sheet?' 'No'
'And the primer'? 'No, we don't keep primers, no one uses them'.
Eventually went back online and found what I wanted in a marine store, including the data sheet and the primer.
I guess you can't get away with bodging a boat, but the building trade certainly thinks it can happily bodge your house.

No grumps for six weeks, must be the weather.
New windows going in. Expensive dg units made with wobbly glass, have to be puttied with Hodgsons Heritage putty - stuff in a tube.
I hate puttying, so used a glazier recommended by the joiner... 'he's very concientious'.
Two days late, he arrived. Started fitting the units in the first two windows that I installed myself, which I may say are the second lot of units for these particular windows after someone who might be me mismeasured them in foreign measurements.
Lot of huffing and puffing....
"I'm not used to this stuff can't we use normal putty?"
"Are you painting them, they'll look all right when they're painted".
Two hours later, eight units.... "Best I can do".
Well, I could have done them no worse. He got them in, some are pushed back so far they're against the back of the rebate, there are lumps and bumps and dropouts in the backing putty. I know who's going to be fixing that.
Today, after visiting the optician - clue, here - he's coming back to front them, in 'normal' putty. Yes, that was two hours just to back and sprig them.
There are 26 more units to go. I think I will be backing and sprigging them in, then he can come and front them.
Another job I'd not planned to do.
And this morning I noticed one has a small crack across a corner. I bet it was covered by the blue spacers they put on for transport. So that's another £120 gone. Oh well, it's only money.
The wobbly glass is lovely though, so I suppose I'll be happy with them eventually.
Later this week the (recommended) windor fitter is coming to do three more windows. He's hurt his back. His usp is pre-glazing, then fitting the glazed window. No wonder he's hurt his back. So he's coming - three days late - with 'a lad', and trying to do in one day what he previously planned in two. I can see this going well.
He only fits. He doesn't glaze, or make good. Muggins will have to make good. Plastering, rendering, two of my pet hates.
Sometimes wonder if it's worth the hassle. A Barrat box + some plastic beams, much less bovver.

Put a window back in today after changing part of a sill. Everything went surprisingly well until I decided to give the opening a quick sand to remove a bit of paint on the edge before re-fitting the glass. Big splinter went in at the side of a finger nail and when I finally got it out after an hour of painful attempts I was surprised to find it had gone in by 10mm. (Fine now.)
Of course it is worth it Ivor! Shame trades are hit and mostly miss. A timely comment on backing too - looked it up before fitting the glass. Photo of the sill from earlier as every post needs photos!

Thats a nice piece of carpentry Malcolm, well done that man.
That said I guess, you had the tears when you found what was under the original paint, you expended the sweat while preparing for and making the repair, so a little blood was to be expected I suppose.

Ouch! I did much the same on Thursday - put out a hand to catch the wooden door to the church roof in a surprising gust of wind and something went in my right middle finger, deeply. Nothing I could do so faced up to a medical appointment on Friday, but waking on Friday I tried one more time and a 4mm splinter popped out. What relief!malcolm said:

They are hideous things, and some of the tiniest ones are really bad if they go into the wrong place and won't come out, then get infected etc.

Nice bit of joinery Malcolm. Based on my recent experience of marrying new sections into old on windows, I'd paint it for now and give it 6 months and then blend the new into the old, and repaint again. I spent ages getting mine so there was no visible join between the two, but after 6 months the new timber had moved a tiny bit and the joints were visible. Sand them back in again then and re-paint and they stay invisible is what I've found.

Those pathetic, loathsome, feeble attempts at a tap with the red handle on them, and that turn even the most basic plumbing job into a major event.
They get stuck shut, they get stuck open, they shear off inside, they leak, the handle spins around without doing anything, they do absolutely everything to avoid their primary purpose of turning water off and on again.
I have been involved in DIY plumbing for nearly 50 years now, and I truly do not ever remember one of these stupid valves actually just working properly!
Admittedly I have always lived in an area with very hard water, so I accept there may be somewhere on the planet where these things may occasionally work, but not in East Anglia.
