New colours - others having reading problems?

The 'signature' is the 'pithy' comment at the end of a post. It appears every time that person posts.

Along with the graphics etc etc, it can be very irritating.

I don't use moving avatars, signatures, smilies, gifs, etc, but I don't see them as a big problem. I just look past them. My students would think this board looks very retro without them. I use social sites and message boards as part of my classroom and the first thing they want is to be able to personalize their posts.

Albeit I use avatars and signatures when available (set up in a mad moment then left as a reminder), on this site the signature facility does not work.
I presume it is switched off.

alice's post reminds me of all the "young people" forums talking about computers that I visit.
Almost without exception on those sites the post with the biggest, flashiest avatar hides an egoistic idiot or fool who has little or nothing to say and is usually wrong and rude when they do.
Somtimes avatars are informative and pleasant, sometimes not.

Signatures really do get in the way IMO.
Reading the same old thing time after time often with a totally inappropriate post/comment rather suggests the author/poster needs to be reminded in what they believe just in case they don't remember.
(or what persona they wish to portray on that particular forum)

I tend to side with Nemesis in this matter.

I also agree with Nemesis concerning the density of the posts in this forum.
On my pc (resolution 1280x1024 pix) the post subject is so far away from the replies, author, Views, last post etc and yet so close to those subjects above and below that it is almost impossible to see which pertain to what.
I suggest the spacing needs to be increased slightly to make the forum less of a jumbled mess as it appears to people like me.

Redesigns always tend to throw people. For myself, I find the forum easier to read if I drop the font size (your browser can do this). At the moment, the font is larger than that on any other forum I read, and the tight line spacing can make longer spans of text hard to read.

It's large as a result of those of us with poor eyesight requesting it be readable!

With regard to sigs and the like - the decision was taken at the last redesign not to have them. A wise decision in my view.

I have varifocals as thick as goldfish bowls, so the text looks enormous to me. :lol:

I utterly loathe signatures. I can't stop myself reading them over and over again. Picture signatures are even worse.
I don't mind avatars but can easily see who is posting without them.

Funnily enough I am never truly happy with the avatar I choose for myself.

As you probably have noticed, we have changed the design of the entire Period Property UK website. The functionality and content has remained largely unchanged, just the appearance has changed. We're very excited about this change as we hope that the site now has a fresh feel about it, plus we've brought the site into line with more recent web design standards.

In the event that you discover something that you think would be worth bringing to our attention regarding the new website design, please do so using the Feedback form. A link to this can be found in the footer of most content pages and the home page.

P.S. I have recently received constructive comments regarding the background colour of the 'New Post' screen, (which I have lightened) and the colour of the text (which I have darkened), and the colours of the buttons (which I have not changed - still considering that one). I've also increased the spacing between posts on the index page.

Simon, as promised, I've spoken with my two colourblind sons and shown them the forum.

They find the text in the posting-box difficult to read: the background is too bright a yellow, and the text appears grey to me, which gives them inadequate contrast between the text and background. Can you make it blacker?

The orange in the quote boxes and preview/submit is too bright for me, but they don't find it too troublesome.

Overall, they don't see lots of different background colours, just shades of muddy grey. They prefer the lighter background colours, as it gives more contrast with the text.

My dyslexic son (and my dyslexic self!) prefers the more muted colours, as the brighter ones make the characters jiggle about too much to read easily.

And if you're really interested I'll tell you how it affects my synaesthesia.

Sorry to hear that you suffer from daily sex, Jane. Have you ever tried the pink filter trick?

My dyslexic son found that words tend to jump around less if viewed through a pink filter. Admittedly this was on the printed page - I don't know whether it would work on a computer monitor.

Ah, Penners. You never fail to grasp the wrong end of the stick with both hands. Bless your heart.

I've pretty much sorted myself out now (although my short-term memory continues to fail). We've tried coloured filters for Freddy, but what with his colourblindness and synaesthesia (which gives all of his letters slightly different colours, some of which he can't see with his "normal" vision), we've yet to find one that helps all the time.
