need insurance - any suggestions?

Well if it is destroyed I presume that you will lose money, I presume you paid money to purchase it, and a historic building would be lost too of course.

It could be worth contacting the Association of Preservation Trusts

as they deal with those responsible for historic buildings which often stand empty waiting repair.

this is in the small print of the people who are offering us holiday home insurance.

HH921 OBSOLETE BUILDINGS The Buildings Insured by this policy are to be treated as obsolete and the settlement of claims shall be on the basis of:

* the cost of purchasing a similar building plus, if insured, an allowance for the removal of debris or
* the cost of erecting a modern building providing comparable facilities to the insured building plus, if insured, an allowance for professional fees, removal of debris costs and additional expenditure which might arise out of the Local Authorities' requirements.

i guess thats the kind of thing we need at worst case

these insurers are not bothered that its unoccupied, or that its in ireland. i did reiterate that we intend fairly severe repairs, and that didnt bother them either, as long as the locks on the doors were good and we draind the heating in the winter.
there doesnt seem to be any mention of wether the building is in an adequate state of repair. they aparently dont send out forms to fill in they just give quotes over the phone.
it all seems a bit unspecific to me. (or its just run of the mill stuff to someone who insures old irish houses and nothing to get in a flap about cos theyre all dropping to bits)

theyre the only place to give us any kind of quote though. just over £100 a year. doesnt sound much

thanks for your help with this everybody.
after nearly a month of ringing round ive had enough, and we're going to start work next week.
adequate or not, the only insurance ive managed to get is "holiday home".
they cover fire theft act of god etc, any builders we use will be insured anyway (wont they?).

they are happy to cover us while the renovation is under way (that sounds very grand!), but if we knock the wrong wall down, or cut the pipes, its our own silly fault. This sounds fair enough to me.

isnt that the same kind of thing that would happen with "renovation insurance"?

I would Really like to know what sort of insurance everyone else has got.
ok, mostly it will be normal house insurance, but what have those on diy, bigger or more unusual projects got?(especially if you live "off site"
or couldnt you get insurance and are just living with your fingers crossed?

The place isn't really in the sort of condition which normal insurance covers, is it?

i cant believe we're unique. basic repairs really, just so many of them.
(ok, being in ireland threw a spanner in the works a bit)

some boring questions, but i realy hope someone can give me answers. Im confused and want it sorting!

Depends...any builder worth his salt should have full cover including public liability. I would ask to see his certificate details before commencing work.
