Arn't there any professional geologists on this forum? - cos' I could well do with some serious help here......
Get it the right way around....Feltwell said:I studied Civil Engineering at university - and as the old joke goes, look up Civil Engineering in Yellow Pages and it says "See boring".
Very interesting - one of my neighbours has a 200ft borehole though they're only 25ft above sea level, sunk in 1947 but the owner was unable to supply any information in 1969.
It's annotated as
??Drift
Crg
?Lower London Tertories
Chalk

(Go to the help menu and click "about" to get this info)Schoolmarm said:It was the zoom and pan bit after clicking on my details that I failed on. I will, try and enable pop ups but don't know how.
You may also find this link a bit quicker to getting to the site: http://mapapps.bgs.ac.uk/boreholescans/boreholescans.html

Opera? Latest version. :? 11.01
I can get in the first bit, it is whe I get in the georecords+ and try to get my bit again to purchase. It won't let me use the controls.

Tried this but it said "firefox has blocked three popups" how do I turn them off?
There's nothing wrong with Opera. However some web engineers can be a bit lazy about testing their code in all available browsers. And as Opera is one of the less popular ones out there, this may be a case of that.Schoolmarm said:Opera? Latest version. 11.01

Drift is superficial unconsolidated "modern" stuff like alluvium, and glacial/periglacial deposits. Young stuff only '000s of years old and covering the "proper" rocks below.
Tertories is probably a poor spelling of Tertiaries which is the system that lies above the Cretaceous Chalk and can be all sorts of stuff including sands, gravels and clays and caps/contains the chalk aquifer below it.
I assume the depth is to allow the hole to "recharge" as a narrow diameter hole would very quickly be pumped dry.
