shelli - your question about under-using your flue liner is actually quite an important one... depending what you mean by "under-using". It's important that your flue temperature is not too low, because that can cause the precipitation of combustion tars that we've been talking about. The correct operating temperature for the uninsulated flue about 2 feet above the stove is between about 120 and 250 degrees C.

the stove has a 1 metre stovepipe anyway so thats the first 3ish feet taken care of

when I say "under using" I meant in terms of having a liner of a superior grade -= more than is necessary for a domestic setting - I was planning on lighting it now and keeping the fire in until april anyway !! - so I think it will get and remain hot enough

There is a national stove shortage! We got ours from the bargain basement at Machine Mart, but their website now says that they have sold out of every model, and most of the accessories.
Friends of ours had a chimney fire last night; the seat was in the valve at the top of the stove which restricts air flow into the flue. Apparently there was a large build up of tar, which eventually caught, and wasn't spotted until a delivery driver commented on the flames coming out of the chimney. A bit embarrassing, since our friend is a fireman, and had to watch his colleagues climb to the roof and stick a hose down the chimney.

Ouch - I bet the water made a right mess. I've often wondered about the merits of putting out a chimney fire that way against letting it burn itself out. I've experienced two chimney fires and neither lasted more than 10-15 minutes - well, the roaring had stopped by then anyway! But they were both in unlined brick chimneys; I'm not sure how a liner would fare.

An elderly lady of my acquaintance made a habit of starting a chimney fire at her bungalow, every couple of years. She claimed that it did no harm and saved her the cost of a chimney sweep.

As kids we loved chimney fires though our parents didn't seem to share the excitement. There would be a veritable stampede of kids to watch the chimney.
Sadly (from the point of view of kids pre-tv era), as has been said, they didn't last long but I seem to remember from the one time our house had such a fire that the room with the fireplace ended up a real mess.
As an adult, the thought of a chimney fire would scare me to bits.

I think the hose was set to a fine spray, rather than jet, which combined with the stove doors being shut meant that although there was quite a mess in the front room, it didn't look like a scale model of Pompeii. Once it was out, a heat-seeking camera was used to check for scorched roof timbers. I would have thought that if the fire brigade were on the roof anyway, a board across the top of the chimney and closure of all the stove vents would have starved the fire of oxygen.

When my sister got married, there was a chimney fire in the hotel where the reception was being held. All the girls went wild when one of the fireman came in to say there wasn't anything to worry about.

If there was a build up of tar so low it suggests that the chimney never got hot.
Unless, of course, the tar dripped/ran back down the chimney having condensed out further up.
Did the fire have a liner (keeping on subject) going all the way up the chimney?
I imagine that there are many older stoves, once used with coal, being used with wood where the tar condenses and drains down settling upon the register plate already thick with soot making a thick pool.
