Moo - that was a really useful post. I know exactly what you mean but it's very good to read that to consolidate my knowledge - I'd forgotten that by cutting on the diagonal of the weave the fabric can magically turn corners.
When I made the pink frill on these curtains:

I didn't cut the strips on the bias, ought I to have done? It was hell getting it to lie nicely between those two layers. I did join the sections together with diagonally cut ends though.
Marm - I'm sure you're right and someone locally would do this for me - but I got a new sewing machine for my birthday and I fancy having a go, though I'll probably chuck it in the bin in frustration!
