I think I've used significantly fewer litres of oil in the ten months we've been here than you lot, for 9 rads, cooking and hot water. But then I've showered in the gym (or not bothered), worn 10 jumpers in winter, and lived on yoghurt.

I'd sooner have caned 3000 litres of oil!

We have used the heating as little as possible. The timer hasn't even been on. It has been turned on manually for one hour here and there.

I have had so many clothes on it has been difficult to move.

I only started that regime last autumn though so haven't yet completed a full year of it. 3000 is our normal use.

Well, I sympathise. This whole oil system is horrific; the oil just disappears and the house remains freezing.

How did they survive in 1750? The fires only heat a fraction of the overall space!

Last time I checked, Penners' proverbials seemed just about to have survived the rigours of winter, thank you. But to clarify our fuel usage, we run the heating from 7.00 - 9.00am and then from 5.30 - 10.30pm. Plus an occasional bit of a boost for an hour or so at lunchtime if Mrs P is "freezing" *.

the house is poorly insulated and in a slightly cooler climate than chez Penners.

Slightly?! I understand that polar bears wear chunky sweaters, up there.

* To further clarify: as any married man will tell you, for the female of the species there are only two temperatures - "cosy" and "freezing". The dividing line seems to be around 20 degrees C.

Penners Towers is invariably the latter.

I'm glad that your proverbials are fine, Penners, and completely agree with your wife that we women cannot function under 20 degrees C. It always puzzles me that women are colder then men, and yet have more natural insulation about them.

Jocelyn.... in reply to your query, we are planning to do a part exchange.

My neighbour was speaking to an ex Aga engineer and he was told that a brand called 'Redfyre' are better, incorporating many features of the aga but being more cost effective.... sorry if I've got the name wrong....I first 'googled' something called 'Firestone' and came up with lots of tyre info!

Thanks Nina. Not sure that you will find the oven sizes on the Redfyre as good as the Aga, in which you can use every shelf and the floor for multi baking etc.
