Well I guess to be strictly accurate each molecule will produce a very high frequency "PTWANNNNNGGGG" (*) as it releases so some energy will be in sound as well.

(*) this is a highly technical word that I wouldn't expect anyone to know.

Fission converts some matter to energy.

The manufacturers and suppliers of Ground Source Heat Pumps regularly state 300-400% efficiency meaning 1KW of electrical energy to run the pumps and compressors results in 3 or 4KW of heat output in the house
BUT
The pumps and compressors run on electricity which comes primarily from fossil fuel powered generation - coal fired power stations are only about 30-40% efficient with most of the energy 'in' the coal being lost in heat at source.
So you put that into the overall calculation and you're back to square one with a coal fired back boiler

The original point wasn't about different forms of energy, it was about the creation of energy - or the fact that it's impossible to create energy, only convert it from one form to another.

Mechanical energy is different to chemical energy is different to nuclear energy, but they can all be energetically equivalent.

The physics guy here said the tension (potential energy) in the acid-eaten spring would be converted to heat, which take care of the energy conversion and satisfy the "energy is neither created or destroyed" law.

Well, the next time you've had a bit too much of your favorite intoxicant, and are feeling philosophical, think of this.... if all matter is made of energy, and we're made of matter made of energy, and God, who made the Big Bang, is really the sum of all energy in the universe, then are we made of God?

And if all matter is made of the same energy, then I'm made of the same stuff of period houses and woodworm and dry rot....(back to topic...)

Sorry, Alice, you've overshot my philosophy threshold.

All I know is that I'm made of rather too much matter, and rather too little energy.

But I suspect that the one is consequential upon the other.

How about there being nothing at all and then all of a sudden this nothing exploded into 'positive nothing' and 'negative nothing', or matter and anti-matter, and the universe came into being. It's currently still expanding and it might (1) carry on expanding and effectively 'disappear' through infinite dilution (the open universe theory) or (2) gravity eventually stops it expanding and starts to pull it all back on itself until it collapses into itself (the 'big crunch') and all the matter and anti-matter is anihilated back to nothing again.

But it was a once-only deal.

Perhaps not if (2) above happens. One thing's certain though - we'll never know for sure :wink:

It would appear that idea 2 is growing in popularity, due to theoretical calculations of the amounts of dark matter and dark energy. Something to do with there being too much of it for infinite expansion to take place.

I can't wait to see who's right.
