I agree with you Lime, I used up a tin of F&B modern emulsion in the front hall when we first moved in here, it is rubbish.

Funnily enough I thought F&B was overpriced and a bit rubbish until I recently painted out hall and landing with Teresa's Green estate emulsion.
It covered well, went on easily and was pleasant to clean up. It may not be the best paint in the world but you should try "big shed own brand" to compare it to.
We once tried to cover a yellow wall with green - after 3 coats it still wasn't covering and we gave up and painted it yellow again!

Decided to go with Earthborn Claypaint, rather than F&B Casein Distemper. Just on grounds of durability, reduced coats required, and postive feedback from folks on here. Havent heard anyone really mention F&B Distemper.... Mrs.Chapel though is dead set on F&B Pointing colour, so we're using one of Earthborn's tinting centres who will pigment colour match. It's not cheap at £50 per 5l, but hopefully it'll be worth it...

Probably too late now, but we have used Amstel soft distemper across old lime, new lime and modern nasty pink stuff with very pleasing results. It is easy for a non-professional (Me!) to apply, doesn't smell too awful and has reasonable ' green' credentials.

F&B Casein Distemper is nearly 60 quid a can. :shock: i never did understand the farrow and ball thing apart from it being stupidly expensive and according to most professional painters ive spoken to , crap. Their limewash is nearly 40 quid for 5 litres, thats just laughable, what does their lime wash contain that others dont?
I am probably committing PPUK heresy by buying Livingetc but I thought it worth the disgrace of admitting to it to pass this on...
The Feb edition has a 15% saving offer for paints bought before 6th Feb at designerpaint.co.uk. There's a pretty good range of paints including F&B (whatever their merits), earthborn, Little Greene and some other eco paints and Fired Earth which I think has a good range of colours with low VOCs, so they say. Though, I suppose it might only be worth doing if the saving is not outweighed by the delivery charge.
NB - to save anyone who might be considering this offer the humiliation of actually buying the magazine, the code to enter at the checkout when ordering is LETC15.
And, I have just tried out some earthborn paint samples and while the range is limited, the coverage is great and I love the consistency - like painting with cream.

Heavens, I nearly missed that we were doing the Farrow and Ball argument again!

I love Farrow and Ball, I think their wallpaper range is about the best if you're doing up a period property. Little Greene paper is flimsy, cheaper, lower quality. Zoffany has some lovely stuff but can be wild, Cole and Son likewise but it's largely contemporary. Once you've committed to using FnB paper throughout, who would run round trying to get paints to match that aren't available locally? Not me, life's hard enough. And I can see the Rose of Jericho paints are beautiful but they're predominantly washed out and pastelly, there's no equivalent to some of the darker colours FnB do - like Eating Room Red, Oval Room Blue. So I'd happily pay whatever a can to get the matching casein distemper in FnB to my wallpaper.
As for the quality of the paint, I think it's excellent and they're making constant improvements. For example, the new eco eggshell for wood is miles better than the water based eggshell they introduced a few years ago. It goes on differently, but after 3 months you're hard pressed to see which door is in oil eggshell (now phased out) and which is in Eco Eggshell - I had to use both in my hallway. The preparation must be excellent, and you must use three thin coats - that's why builders don't like it. And it's better to paint with the grain, not in all directions like you do with some others.
I agree the wipe clean modern emulsion isn't nice, but the estate emulsion is very thick, and reasonably easy to use.
I can see that if your plan isn't for a dark peach room, a dark yellow room, a green room, a blue room, a red room, it might not have so much to recommend it but if you like strong colours that look "antique" with matching wallpaper there's no other company who do what they do. If I've missed one please tell me!
I'm going to a Farrow and Ball talk in Feb, should be interesting! Though I'm very sad to learn they're discontinuing Sand and Dutch Pink and bringing in a fiery 1950s orange -Charlotte's Locks - truly vile. I don't think they'll ever desert their core palette of 18th and 19th C colours though.

I agree with Joce about F&B wallpapers. They are produced using traditional block printing methods on brushed grounds. This gives the colours greater freshness and vibrancy, not to mention the wonderful texture of the printed areas. The only criticism I have is that they are not very ambitious in terms of the number of colourways used in any given design, but this does have the advantage of keeping the price down. For very classy, multi-colourway hand printed papers Watts of Westminster cant be beaten but their range is rather narrowly focused on the mid to late 19th Century. Coles is also supposed to have a large back catalogue of hand printed designs which can be made to order and which are no doubt very good also, but I have never used them.

Yes, Coles does have a range of made to order handblocked papers---at a price!! Lovely though!

How I'd love to see that Coles back catalogue! Amd particularly to see if there are any really good stone block papers... too late for here now, though, really.
I completely agree with you about the lack of colour spectrum in the papers, I think they're all just two colours and even with the pattern range you often find yourself wishing for a different shade.
But, having just two colours, or even variations in shade, in the paper, leads to an uncluttered look.

That's interesting---- would the clay paint be 'man enough' for the bathroom wall --the bit above the shower gets black spots and it needs wiping regularly--michael said:

Not sure, but I’m currently trying out clay paint in my bathroom as well. Already done the ceiling and will soon be doing the walls. I’ve had a few steamy baths in there since the ceiling was painted and there appears to be no problems so far i.e. no condensation on the ceiling. I’m guessing that the clay paint dose absorb some of the steam but then allows it to evaporate away due to its breathability. I would be reluctant to use clay paint in a kitchen though as I imagine it could absorb and retain fatty deposits in the air but I would be interested to know if anybody has used this paint in a kitchen environment. I’ve personally broken all the period property paint product rules in my kitchen and used a modern glossy type white emulsion that remains relatively clean for a year or so and can be sprayed and wiped clean occasionaly.
