Sorry my lady if I missed that you had worked out why the bedrock (or Penner's lump of clay) was bouncing around. I don't know of anybody that is using the movement directly to make electricity currently but it must be possible - the forces involved are pretty impressive

Of course, this is not 'free' energy and has to come from somewhere; probably from fossil fuel in the first example and additional food in the second.
The concept of 'bed-rock' energy harvesting also has some interesting possibilities. :wink:
Everyone knows about the moon pushing the sea about a bit but many people don't realise that exactly the same affect causes the big rock we call home to bulge in time with the tides as well. It happens everywhere but apparently the effect is more pronounced in the UK due to the mass of water moving into and out of the North Sea. I think our current favourite Physicist said it was a few of mm movement on Stargazing Live a few weeks ago.
On Io (Jupiter's moon), the same effect drives volcanoes so there is certainly some energy available.

Not half as much they did one day a few decades ago as I sat at a desk somewhere in the Far East.
One minute I was there working minding me own business, the next second it felt as if everything had been moved an inch to the right, and then put back again.
It was the sharpness of the move that suprised me.
Everybody stopped and looked up.
There was a distinct pause and then the rattling came as the partitions in the office shook.
Then it all went quiet again that was it.
Just another "small earthquake"
Not being an expert in such matters I always assumed the first jolt was the P wave, and the later rattling was the S wave.

After many attempts with traditional mousetraps and a variety of baits recently, I bought 2 of these on a whim today.
2 hours later and I've caught two of the little buggers already.
The only thing I would say is that if you're squeamish, then death is not instantaneous with these devices; which it probably is with a traditional trap, or rather would be if they ever caught any.
They are easy and safe to set and the Big Cheese are ready baited with something that looks and smells a bit like peanut butter. It is certainly attractive to mice. 8)

I dispatched 5 mice pretty rapidly with those - they look to be the same as B&Q's own brand ones that I bought, save for the "Big Cheese" logo. I supplemented the bait with a sliver of Mars Bar, I didn't try just the preloaded bait.
4 mice were killed instantly, the 5th I will admit I found injured and had to finish off as quickly and humanely as I could.

- The original installer had clearly lost the screws that held the top of the case on, and had bodged in some far too small wood screws to hold it in place
- The original installer had failed to tighten the neutral, which had been arcing as a result and had fried the terminal block
- The original installer had used an RCBO (the trip thingy for the electric feed, for an acronym-free basic explanation) that was rated too highly for the cable.
Apart from that it was a quality job :evil:
