Some dogs are very good killers of rats and mice too.

Some horsey friends of ours used to have a couple of very well-trained Jack Russells that were sent into the feed store about once a week. The door was closed, there was a brief outburst of noise (dogs barking and bins rattling) then silence. When the door was opened again, two happy dogs emerged and their owners went in to gather up the corpses.
Mind you, those dogs were real pros compared with our lurchers, only one of whom showed the slightest interest in mice. But on the rare occasion when one appeared in the kitchen he was on it like lightning. And he showed absolutely no interest in our garden wildlife.

Ahh, but do they offer a "This one is a good mouser and not just a lazy lump that likes the top of a radiator / freezer / any other warm spot to spend 23 hours a day asleep on, and the other hour scrounging food & fuss from it's slave" guarantee?

Memories of family moggies from my youth was that all bar one fell firmly into the "lazy lump" category. The other one was a runt of a litter, that grew into the most enormous black tom you have ever seen. It was semi-ferral - it would disappear from our house for weeks at a time, local farmers told us they saw it frequently hunting round their grain stores where the rats are HUGE. They always knew it was our cat as it was so big it was very distinctive.

If we get an infestation of mice then I';ve decided I'll definitely get a cat. Better not tell the kids otherwise they'll be bringing in mice especially! They often say they'd like a cat or a dog here. The trouble is I'd like a handsome fellow like Joce's cat Macavity...

Get one get one get one!!! Macav was only £100, because his stripes are a bit fuzzy. He's a silver grey British Shorthair mackerel tabby - guaranteed good mousers, and too heavy to catch birds. ( the Bacardi Breezer cats are American Shorthairs, by the way)

The blues are the classic teddy bear shape. Very gentle giants - they do eat a lot though. And they need a lap in the evening.

Agreed - same goes for dogs. Give the £400 to the sanctuary.

I went to the local dog shelter recently to take in a Staffordshire Bull Terrier that turned up in our garden - found out eventually that it was "visiting" a neighbour for the weekend, and it had got out. Cost them money to get it back from the shelter but then maybe they'll persuade the stupid owner to put a tag on it's collar and get it microchipped.

Anyway, it was a lovely dog, soft as butter - the shelter was full of dogs of that breed, as they attract the kind of moron who thinks they look like a pitbull and make them look "hard". Staffies are generally very placid, such a shame to see so many being abandoned.

Because regrettably their appearance makes them attractive to the kind of knuckle-dragging individuals who will call them Satan, Rambo or whatever. The same individuals who will not train them properly and abandon them when they become too much of a handful. The same kind of moronic individual who no doubt owned "killer".

There will of course be the odd bad one, but there's nothing wrong with them as a breed, they are not pitbulls.
