Hoppy.....thank you for your comment. I think that this would possibly have been the best solution but I was already knee deep in various adhesives when I realised that you had left your post.

Hoppy, just out of interest, is there any way of 'buffering' plaster of paris so that it dries more slowly, without losing any of its strength or adhesive qualities?

yes you can...add a little decorators "Size" to your water, you can retard plaster to about 30-40 minute set
