You missed it. Saw some great work being done on an old house. Spotted a very large stack of empty lime tubs. The ground floor construction was rather interesting. There was about a foot thickness of cobbles, rounded stones averaging perhaps 4 inches diameter, then a couple of inches of plaster, apparently about 25% sand and 75% gypsum. This floor, no damp course of course, was dry and, as gypsum tends to fall apart with wetting, looks as though it has kept dry for the last 200 years. The upper floors were all plaster too, laid on reed.

We also visited a Saxon/Norman church and exposed a fine demonstration of how a sheet of polythene can trap water when misguidedly used in a floor construction.

Next meeting is at Gainsborough Old Hall. This really is one of the nation's best medieval hall houses. Details from Jennifer via website above. Worth joining SPAB for.
