I just watched the green wood mastercrafts last night, but even though I rewound and checked one bit several times I still couldn't see what the "special tool" was that he used to turn the ends of spindles so accurately to 17.5mm each time? Does anybody know please how it's done?

Hmm, I can't remember anything about a special tool for that. I seem to recall the chap using some calipers to measure the students' attempts though.

Mrs FF says I have a tendency to 'nap' when in front of the TV, which I deny, but the snoring gives it away, apparently.

I suspect that the tool used will depend on the personal preference of the turner, but it would probably normally be a skew chisel (see below). This allows you to get nice clean shoulder on the spigot.

The rest is down to the skill of the turner, and as Flyfisher pointed out, frequent use of the vernier calipers.

I've just been looking through next weeks TV Mag and the Mastercrafts program for 26th Feb is on Blacksmithing. The review says "Monty Don follows three people as they learn the crafts foundations, and apply it by designing and forging front gates for residents in Humberside"

Doesn't he know Humberside doesn't exist anymore!
