Markers Marks and Position of Beam on Ship

DSCF2969.JPG Our house contains many recycled beams such as this one which is molded but the molding stops a couple of feet short of the wall, others have rebates cut for timbers which are not there so probably from other buildings.

Unless your house has changed significantly over the years?
Ours has, so what is a funny rebate in the beam only 2' from the outside wall, is in fact, the marker for the central point of the original room, which most of it has now long gone,
