Not being around when the anti-emoticon legislation was passed on PPUK, I'm wondering what the reasoning was behind it.

Don't mistake my flippancy and/or weak attempts at humour for established legal precedent. And I agree that emoticons can help to convey the mood and attitude of the writer.
