For myself, I just want to know where on earth gravity is weakest, so that I know where to put my bathroom scales.

Jakarta or Singapore are good places with a g of 9.781 m/s². This compares to the average of 9.80665 m/s² though the equator would be better with an average value of 9.78033 m/s². (The poles are the worst place as your scales would read about 0.5% higher compared to the equator.)

See, I told you I'd never been there. I had to look it up on Google Earth to find out that I had been in the area when I passed through Birmingham. So I'm to understand Dudly is the Anti-Southwold? Bizzaro-Southwold? Chav-wold?

A few years ago there was an earthquake in the the Midlands - nothing on a south-east Asian scale, but it did cause quite a bit of structural damage.

Its epicentre was Dudley, and it was reported that the earthquake had made £5-million-worth of improvements to Dudley.

As a footnote, there was a small tornado in Dudley only yesterday. Do you think someone is trying to tell us something?

Any town which has in its market square something as terrific as this isn't all bad either:

Every year, when I come back to Lowestoft, someone will notice my non-Suffolk accent and wonder why I'm there. The don't worry too much about Lowestoft being the Eastermost Part of England as they think it's The Armpit of Europe and the Black Hole of the United Kingdom. I can now tell them it was either Lowestoft or Dudley.

I am worried about the tornados, though. There aren't supposed to be tornados in the UK and I thought when I left Texas I'd be done with fire ants, scorpions, 15 species of poisonous snakes, Brown Recluse spiders, armadillos (which have leprosy), coyotes and skunks (rabies), hail the size of baseballs and tornados. A well, at least my house in Lowestoft has a basement...

Yes 1949 is a pretty early listing date.

There was a sort of listing before that, but the beginnings of listing as we know it Jim began with the Town and Country Planning Act of 1947.

The process was painfully slow, by 1951 only 12,496 buildings had been listed.

The whole sytem is still a bit of a shambles, but it's better than nothing!
