Are flourescent lamps used in bakeries?

Only when used with Bakelite switches.

If you want your fluorescent light to start in one pulse rather than strobing into life, and you want the tube to last longer, use a "pulse" starter rather than a standard starter. I can predict with some confidence that you can buy these from most electrical wholesalers, or in Focus DIY :wink:

If you are looking for the green option, stick with what you have. T5 / T8 florescent tubes are just as efficient as CFLs (if not more so).

Thanks for your advice,replaced it with a T8 with a diffuser from B and Q (£21) a much softer light but the kitchen is brighter.Screwed it to the beam over the inglenook,a bit cramped but the oak was as hard as nails,managed to drill the first hole about 1" deep before the drill bit smoked and refused to cut anymore so I drilled new holes in the lamp fitting to align with the original holes which had rawlplugs in them.Probably 400 year old oak which had been baked for a few hundred years by an open fire! phil.
