It was me that retrieved a fireplace from the garden, mentioned further up thread

do you think the decision for them was because the fireplace appeared to be original feature and therefore that helped? i think a sandstone surround or marble would be what we'd be looking for as well.

I think it helped ease the CO decision that it was an original feature. But as always, it depends on your particular CO how much weight that would carry

I have two logburners/multifuel stoves, both Esse Montrose (we experimented with several different stoves and found the Esse best for our situation ) one in the living room and the other in the kitchen. We do have gas central heating but just use it for an hour in the morning to heat the water. Our hardwood logs come from the local woodyard, nice and dry and a good size, two builders bags for £250 and we burn about eight bags a year plus about £250s worth of smokeless.We have a downstairs room which has no real purpose so the logs are stacked in there and a couple of coal bunkers for the smokeless. This is our total heating cost for a large timber framed house. We also top up the logs with any fallen trees in the garden That last storm brought down a large dead ash in the wood next door with most of it ending up in my garden damaging my estate fencing so I need to get the chainsaw out and it should help out for next season. These logburners are certainly not for show, I bought a third one from eBay and stripped it down for spares but have not needed any yet. a proper receptacle for the ash pan helps to keep the ash under control and I have a Henry vac reserved for the weekly clean. Yes it does involve a bit of work but I am retired and the only downside is excess heat! I dozed off earlier and when I woke it was 26c in the living room!
