My fault for spelling Scot's pine with too many tttts. I should stick to Latin. Pinus sylvestris. I'm sure the Scandinavians don't call it Scot's pine anyway.

I'm sure, Piper, that you and your builder are not the PVC types but my critical thought was directed at the architect who specified 'treating' rather than the timber to be used. It's my contention that getting the right timber is the important thing. And then painting it with the right paint. There are plenty of 200 year old bits of external joinery that have survived without biocidal chemicals. Reliance on poison is not good practice, in my not at all humble opinion.

Hey - Biff - I'm with you - we need to tread softly on this 'ere earth and I think us period property peeps have a special responsibility to do this. I ,like Biff ,am a great believer in the Holkham Linseed paints. I stripped (interior and exterior) all my windows and then treated them the Holkham way - they look gorgeous (I used Sea Mist for colour coat on all woodwork and with the grey rubblestone and Limewash stonework its looks just so right) and I firmly believe that they will stay looking good without too much effort for then next few years. Having used this paint I very reluctantly use anything else - whats more you can wash your brushes out in water and linseed soap which makes your hands lovely and soft AND doesn't poison the wildlife - will stop now as I'm getting on my soap box!
