Linseed oil paint, nice website

Has anyone tried this paint?

They claim that the paint they sell has a much quicker drying time than 'ordinary' linseed paint because of the addition of Tung oil.

Very nice paint chart too..... in fact they claim to be able to make any colour you want....apart from Dulux white!

I know from experience that linseed oil does get sticky, especially if you are working with several coats. I have no experience with using it out in the weather, which might make a difference. My experience is with such paints is as an artist and decorator.

The pigments they're using are very stable, so there shouldn't be much of a fade problem (although I noticed with careful reading, that they do use some artificial pigments to create "any color you want"). Some yellows (cadmiums especially) and reds fade badly and will change quite a bit over time.

I was more taken aback by the casual approach to mixing the colors. If you order from them, you'd best make sure you order enough, because you'll never get a color match if they have to go back to their "filthy notebook" and teaspoons.

My worry is that the person who chose the colours for the website is responsible for their pigments! The red text on green is horrible to read (unless I'm showing early signs of r/g colour-blindness) and the overall effect is far from easy on the eye.
I think the only thing to do is order some and see what it's like...

The unfortunate thing with all linseed oil paint is that it is recommended that it is put onto bare wood, for obvious reasons.

That's an awful lot of stripping off of paint I'd have to do!

You don't HAVE to put it on bare wood - it's just that overpainting old paint won't improve the possible dodgy old paint to wood adhesion, and that you don't benefit from the vapour permeability of linseed paint.

I don't think the website in question mentioned vapour permeability, or maybe it was written in red on green so I missed it.

I don't really care about their paint* - I just want to meet their copywriter! Someone with a sense of humour and an aversion to BS, it would seem.

I particularly like the note on the price list pointing out that the paint is more expensive than champagne.

My feelings exactly - the red doesn't half dazzle! I could be bothered to read the page because of it.

I didnt see any red & green, probably cos the browser is set to make all text black & white.

Is there some site where one can see all those atandard colours? I understand why the on-screen colours wont be too accurate.

For those that are not colour blind, try this link which shows what the Linseed Paint Company's website looks like with the common form of red green colour blindness (Protanopia).

As you can see, the red on green text is very hard to read.

I contacted this company last month about their paints as I'm in the process of stripping peeling paint from a Bay window.

They were very friendly and gave me some good advice. I know they are based south of Glasgow as I wanted to be able to collect the paint

Am still stripping paint and no where close to putting linseed anywhere near it so can't comment on the product yet.

It sounds a bit like the sort of place I got my distemper from. Couple of old boys well past retirement age, tatty old place, and no interest in any modern concepts anywhere. Could have been straight out of the 1930s.

Actually it's in Delft in Holland, probably the same shop that Vermeer bought his paints in. It's still thriving.

And so back to the start of this thread. A little enquiry elicited a friendly e-mail. It turns out that the linseed paint business is a sideline of Ross Samson, a cabinetmaker in Glasgow. He has another website: Samson's Joinery. This is well worth a visit and I don't think it has any red on green pages.
