Hi All,

I must admit that, I am very dismayed at the discussion being Locked; We at Lincrusta pride ourselves with giving our Installers, clients and users in over 50 countries in the world the most up to date information and customer service.
So How Can informing your readers of Period property (UK), regarding the ability to restore, conserve and replace Historical Lincrusta, Cameiod and Lignomur be advertising, I am a Time served Master Painter and decorator, and was just trying to inform people of their options, if they then wish to talk to me further, this then will be beneficial to all the readers of your discussion forum, or they can talk to me directly on andy.sarson@cwvgroup.com

I am currently posting on 17 different discussion forums around the world and have never come up against something like this.

It seems that the people that think this is advertising don’t really understand Lincrusta and how we are trying to save Historical wallcoverings in period properties around the world.
What is your strap line for People with a Passion for Period Property
I am one of those people!!

I would like to think that someone, will see sense and un lock this discussion, or at least talk to me about this.

Hello Mr Lincrusta and sorry you've been upset by the locking of the thread. It's a matter of "netiquette" I suppose, we have lots of expert people here who give freely of their advice and opinions on all manner of topics, and yours would be very welcome too. But linking to a product you sell just isn't done here without people getting upset; it would spoil our discussion forum if we were to come on and see that the top ten threads were all different trades pushing their wares -surely you can see that? There is a chance to link to your website in your profile which will show up as a blue globe under where you live. But people will not appreciate having the product rammed down their throats. Lots of tradesmen post here and barely mention what they do or sell.

As you are a master painter and decorator I'm sure you'd have lots of useful advice and points to contribute to our many discussions on paint (wallpaper isn't very popular here) and decorations. The main topics of the forum are lime, and building work, actually, and I suspect that few people have the budget for Lincrusta at the end of the project. Do you do other kinds of traditional decorations like trompe l'oeil painting or clouded ceilings? I'd be very interested in that.

I can understand your comments and take that on board, but period properties is where Lincrusta sits very nicely, I apologise if I have upset people this was not my intention at all, just to inform, I will in future be careful what I put on the forum.

As for you saying that Lincrusta is very expensive, I think You need to check out the latest pricing structure and you will be very surprised at its affordability, less of that as I will be advertising LOL.

Also saying that, wallpaper is not popular here!!! So I work closely with English Heritage, and where do they sit! also advising the restoration of Cameiod and Lignomur, I suppose I had better explain this (these products were developed in the late 1800,s from Pulped Cotton and it looks like a high relief Plaster ceiling, but it is NOT! It is a Lincrusta product)
So if it is not popular, why not? Did period properties not have these products!??? I would like people to explain this to me as I must be having a senior moment!!!!!

A number of highly skilled professional tradesmen participapte in this forum: Biff vernon, for example, who makes oak window frames and Toby Newell who restores floors. Both have gained business from doing so, as have others, but one needs to be subtle about it.

As someone who is restoring a Victorian house, the preservation and repair of Lincrusta would have been of considerable interest if I had had any. If you have a client who is wanting to restore some Lincrsuta you could perhaps persuade them to post some pictures/questions, then develop a thread showing how this was achieved. This would be more informative, and demonstrate your product/skill without it being seen as too blatant a form of advertising - something which the sensitive souls on this site seem to take great exception to.

A large number of the members' properties on this site pre-date the invention of Lincrusta, including mine, and it wouldn't be appropriate to put it in a Georgian building or a timber framed cottage. Nigel and I like wallpaper and enjoy talking about it, and pay a great deal of attention to the designs we choose, but many forum members worry that wallpaper compromises breathability issues in already damp houses and they're anxious to replaster in lime and use just limewash or distemper, a vernacular approach that suits a lot of the homes that come up on here - we have very few grander Victorian buildings on here (though of course you never know who is lurking!)

I also think there's still great resistance to using colour and pattern in period properties, the neutrals seem to win most of the time.

I have actually got the lincrusta 'Georgian panel' in my study....suitably vanished/coloured down to represent oak..........no idea when it was put in.
Virtually no one who visits me ever thinks that it is 'Wallpaper' and all believe that it is a true oak panelled room.
Interestingly it's is over a lime and horsehair plastered wall.

That is fascinating. What date is the house?

The only giveaway in the photo is the corner of the room where the panel beds round.

Have you thought of painting the door styles and doorframe any other colour? To me it doen't quite look right in white, especially with the oak effect panels on the door itself. If it was my house I would have a go at graining them to look like oak - not an entirely straighforward task, especially getting a good colour match, but not as hard as it sounds. Another option might to use a dark colour. A dark green or a dark red perhaps?

Was at our local pub last wed evening,the publican told us that the "snug" would be closed as the lincrusta (he called it anaglypta) on the walls was going to be repaired as he had complaints about folks clothes being marked when leaning on it by the door,it is a paneled pattern painted brown (looks convincing)but the high spots have worn through and the loose plaster is showing through.I am interested in seeing what "repaired" means! knowing our local handy man he will probably just slap a bit of "almost matches" paint on it!

Superb Picture a few notes for you all

On the ceiling is an Original Cameiod or Lignamur( I will be looking in my historical books to try and see if I can find the design)

Cameiod was made from Pulped cotton and soaked in urea to help break down the fibre, washed Bleached and then pressed into 21inch x 21 inch (Approx.) Panels, the ceiling would have been set out from the centre outwards, to give even pattern design on all 4 walls where possible. I will get back to you all if I can find the design.

This ceiling by the way is an historical wall covering, and this is where the Restoration kits are working a treat by restoring historical ceilings just like yours (after water damage etc.)

As for the panelling, if the panelling was fitted pre 1940 (Approx.) the panelling is called FLAT AND STRAP (a FLAT paper with a wood effect on the face, and the STRAP, which would have either been fitted on top of the flat or set out and fitted directly to the wall.

It does look to me that the panelling is post 1940 but I could be wrong.

As for the panels on the doors it looks like thet have used the small border section and installed this to the panel and over grained.

Superb I will look at the books in a few mins and come back if i have any information

These ceiling panels would be so interchangeable, what I mean by that, you can use the same 21inch x 21 inch approx. tiles and by turning them achieve different designs, but also using other types of cordelova panels you can get hundreds of different designs.

Can anyone tell me how to upload photos, I can take pictures of the Cordelova (Cameiod ceilings) so you can see what I mean?

The reply from Mr Lincrusta is quite facinating (and thank you for it) as I always wanted to know exactly what the ceiling was - as plaster is certainly is not.
Indeed it is 21" square panels - and you can see the internal of the reliefs where it is cut through for the light fitting. It does look somewhat like rockwool insulation - or as Mr Lincrusta said pulped cotton.

This ceiling does have problems actually as the plaster ground behind is coming away from the laths and in places the ceiling has been screwed up back into the joists behind through the applied panels.
What exactly I am going to do as taking the whole lot down which would probably wreck the panels and then sorting out the ceiling behind and then restoring the orignal ceiling ain't going to be easy.
The solution so far for the last few decades I've been here is "do not touch under any circumstances" - and hope that the whole lot does not give way en-masse......

I think the door effects are done by cutting up sections of the lincrustra paneling pattern and then sticking them to a base which is a sort of smooth wood/oak effect. This smooth base ?lincrustra? can be seen elsewhere inside a display cabinet in the study where the oak effect is done plain.

As to date and to answer Nigel's questions earlier.
The house was built in 1930 but to an earlier design concept/theme/practice. So it is all in lime mortar in construction and lime/horsehair plastered inside with finer sands being used on each coat to arrive at a final surface which is very smooth and totally flat. The ceilings are likewise all lath and plaster.
Fireplaces in all rooms of course - the bedrooms one now long since removed and totally plastered over so only the hearth level with the floor survives.
Doors are pitch pine paneled and are all unpainted bar the study and kitchen ones.
I know the study decorations are not original as a small eastly facing window have been since covered up inside and is invisible - though it still exist as a 'blind window' on the outside.
So if I'm pushed to put a date on the study ceiling & lincrusta paneling work I would say it was done as part of the 1959/1960 refurbishment project on the house.

I will put up some pictures of where the relief has been damaged so you can see the pulped cotton inside and of what I think is the plain wood effect ?lincrusta? inside a display cabinet.
