I have a proper quote and i quote what they said re cleaning out old mortar....

Preparation,
The raking out of the old pointing shall be carefully completed using hand held tools and heritage approved arbortech.

Joints should be thoroughly cleaned from top to bottom after pre-wetting the wall.
Use of brushes, low pressure compressed air or washing out the joints with a hose will be used to remove all loose materials and dust. This is important as dust that is left in the joints will deplete the bond.

Well....hopefully this year, i'd hate to have the house without pointing up here over winter. We aren't forecast any frosts as of yet so i'll keep my eyes and ears on the forecasts.
