If a french drain is sited away from the building (presumably leaving soil in contact with the foundations), how does the plinth give off its moisture?

The French drain can be used to keep general moisture levels around a building down. I've read the reasoning behind all this but at the moment haven't time to search for it!

It creates a moisture gradient in the soil, drawing water away from the wall.

Theres no shortage of uninformed builders about. As Evelyn says, do some reading before doing anything, bitumen is not at all whats wanted.
