Zebra - I used exactly the same light fittings for my (mock) medieval hall as the previous occupants made off with whatever light fittings were there. I fitted pointy bulbs (candle bulbs?) in mine which I like apart from the white bit at the bottom.

Can't add much in answer to the original question other than my strategy is to knock chunks of post 1980 building down to get some natural light, then figure out lighting from there.

I know they're a bit pastiche, and I'm sure the period purists will throttle me, but I like these:

I have these and the double lamp versions dotted around our downstairs (acquired a whole bunch rather cheap) and they blend in rather well.

EDIT: I must point out, I have slightly more sane bulb choices in mine

I certainly wouldn't criticise your choice, a twig, let alone throttle you! However, neither would I give those lights house room myself!

Taste is neither right nor wrong - it's a personal thing.

We had those exact lights - fitted by a previous owner - in the hallway of our Essex house......the house that had been painstakingly taken apart and rebuilt elsewhere back in the 1930s :shock:

We left them in situ as they did actually blend in OK with all the panelling and carved timbers imho......

On the subject of lighting, I recently bought a few of these LED bulbs with built-in PIR detection for our hallways. Just fit them as a normal bulb and leave the lightswitch permanently on. Very easy and very convenient.

Might not be suitable for all types of light fittings, but since we're mostly at the 'bare bulb' stage in many places that's not a big consideration for us at present.

I'm not sure of the specification but in practice it works as soon as I open any door into our 6m x 2m hallway.

Our main main entrance hallway has no windows so the light is always required, night and day, and was often just left on. I had intended to implement an automatic mechanism and bought a suitable PIR sensor a few years ago but had not yet got around to wiring in. Then I saw these 'plug and play' bulbs and bought one to test how it works. I've now got four of them in use . . . . and a spare PIR sensor.


As for the point of my other post, that's consequence of confusing the 'edit' and 'quote' icons. I forgot to include the link in my first post and then mistakenly used the 'quote' button to add it. Since there is no means to delete a post I tidied up my bumbling as best I could. At least it's a genuine period post. :lol:
