A picture is worth a thousand words but if I have to make just one more attempt to attach a picture I shall scream
Too large it says, without telling me the maximum size. I suppose I should remember what it is. Or perhaps, telepathy is involved.
So then I make a guess and reduce it some more, and I get a Sharing Violation, whatever the mutter mumble that might be, and can't save the edit.
So over to Photobucket which is so polluted with advertising it takes maybe a quarter of an hour to upload a new pic and copy a link. Can't be bothered*.

So, we shall have to make do with pictures of the mind.
I have this old light fitting. Prewar, let's say.
An outdoor lamp on an S-shaped arm. The arm is screwed iron, with a female end.
It needs an angled iron baseplate. Then I can use it outside of the garage,

But I don't know what the baseplate is called. 'Screwed iron' just gets me railings.

Does anyone know?

Ivor, I can't help you with your light fitting question, but I can suympathise over the photo/photobucket stuff :roll:

I. too gave up with PB, and now just resize pics on my desktop (I'm using a Mac and still can't do anything photo-wise on my iPad, so have to go upstairs to the office when I want to post piccies, lol!) by opting to reduce the size of each pic to 640 wide x 480 high. This works for me......although I still haven't fathomed how to add more than three to one post

For uploading pictures, you could try a site like postimage.org - Searching for "pastebin for images" turns up quite a few other sites that offer a similar service.

As for the baseplate, I can picture the sort of thing you might want. Being pre-war, it will use imperial threads and may require something custom made. Is this the sort of thing you are looking for ?

They can also supply a corner bracket, whichI have found to give more robust support because the light fitting itself is quite substantial.

I've not actually checked but I suspect the tubing used is standard 20mm electrical conduit with the same thread specification, so perhaps an electrical wholesaler would be able to help with a suitable wall plate. TLC Direct is pretty good for all things electrical and this is the sort of thing I'm thinking about:

Yes. But it needs to be angled. And the thread on the arm is female so I suppose a nipple is required.
20mm might be a good bet. Did they have mm before the war?

Going to an electricals place Friday, perhaps they won't look at me as if I'm mad after all.

Metric threads as we know them were not used before the war - Even after the advent of metrication in around 1972, imperial threads were the norm. In fact, some sectors of industry still use the old threads & measurements - Pipe fittings are generally British Standard Pipe thread.

So for 20mm pipe, pre-war it would be 3/4" outside diameter with a 1/2" BSP thread.

Yes, I was wondering if the actual thread/size had remained the same but is just called something different these days. A bit like in the electronics world where chips used to have a pin spacing of 0.1 inch but these days it's 2.54mm

But even if the threads are actually different, my bet would be on a decent supplier having a stock of suitable adapters - what's needed is for the young counter staff whippersnappers to refer the enquiry to 'old Fred' out in the back who will find said item after a few minutes rummaging through some old dusty cardboard boxes and exclaiming 'we don't get asked for many of these anymore'

Hmm, that's an interesting angle on that tube if you want the lamp to hang vertically ( as I'm sure you do). I'd be surprised if you find a suitable wall-plate to accommodate it as it is. I reckon it'll need a bit of work somewhere, perhaps cutting backe the tube to where it is a right angle to the lamp and then extending it with a short bit of stealing conduit. If you could join a bit of modern conduit to the old piece with some sort of sleeve then at least that would solve the problem of finding a wall- fixing plate. I suppose you could try straightening the existing tube ( it would then be long enough) though I've never had much luck getting a dead straight result from a bent tube.

Nice lamp though, well worth a bit of trouble and strife to get it back into use.

Ivor, is it conduit fittings you want? I'm afraid I'm on lunch at work and haven't clicked all the links in the thread, but isn't your thing made from metal conduit, requiring bushes, couplers, and the like? They're all metric now but I have a few imperial ones in the shed..

Can you find someone to fabricate it for you? It looks pretty simple to weld a bit of internally threaded tubing onto a base plate?

From the pic looks like a coupler is on the end. A spouted dome conduit fitting will give you a nice base to fix it with. Only problem is the angle the thing is at and what size thread it is.
I would try to find if you can cut the conduit and thread it at 20mm if so your home and dry

Zebra, that's very kind of you.
Spent a fruitless hour at two electrical shops one only had foreign, and it's not 20mm.

The other shop had imperial/foreign adaptors, but the female is not ¾", it's just a bit smaller. A fine thread, looks like BSF although I have read that conduit thread was BSW. Perhaps there was also a special conduit thread. Yes, but.......

There is enough meat in the iron light fitting to tap it out and fit a Coughtrie swan. If I had a tap. Could buy one I suppose.

I have found Tracy Tools quite useful in the past for unusual size taps & dies.

Well, you could ignore the thread completely and just slide the end into a larger pipe and glue together with a gap-filling epoxy resin such as car body filler.
That way it could be done and ready for use in about 10 minutes, ... 15 minutes allowing for curing time of the epoxy
