Do you know what the significance of cross is?

No, internet did it all for me, I suspect I paid a premium, and checking my emails I sent and received around 240 emails to negotiate price, design etc so it was an effort. But I paid inc shipping for all of my lights, door furniture, cupboard hinges, door knockers, curtain rail components and companion sets around £6k, each hinge hand forged by a blacksmith would have been around £120 here in the UK ( 48 hinges = £5760) also curtain rails from Jim Lawrence around another £4500. So I got all of my ironwork handmade for a very good price, to my design with enough stock left over to probably sell and get a few thousand back.

As for the significance of the cross, I suspect one of their earlier customers specified it and now it forms an intrinsic part of their design. It certainly seems to identify origin to me which helps date things correctly.

Yup - been there, done that, got the bloody scars.

That cross on the latch is not unusual - it seems to appear on most of the hand-forged jobs that I've seen, from various manufacturers. I've no idea of its significance, but perhaps it's just one of those traditional things whose origins have now long been lost.

I am pretty sure a huge ammount of them come out of the same town in India and follow the same pattern with the cross as that is what they do.

It certainly figures on latches from Westmorland,Sussex, Wilts and Glos 1634 to 1714. On page 28 of Linda Halls Fixtures and fittings in dated houses 1567 to 1763. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fixtures-Fittings-1567-1763-Practical-handbooks/dp/1872414524 . Out of 15 on the page 5 have the cross in one form or another
